FAQs

Answers to common questions about planning, booking and travelling with Offmap Safaris.

How do I start planning?

Tell us your preferred dates, destinations, interests and travel style through our Plan My African Safari page.

Can you tailor a safari?

Yes. We build private and tailor-made journeys around your priorities, pace and interests.

Are cultural visits respectful of local communities?

We arrange cultural experiences through established, consenting community partnerships rather than unscheduled drop-ins, and can talk through what a specific visit involves before you book it.

Are gorilla treks in Rwanda escorted by rangers?

Yes — every gorilla trekking group in Volcanoes National Park is accompanied by armed Rwanda Development Board rangers and trackers for the full duration of the trek.

Are there luxury lodges near Uganda's national parks?

Yes — Uganda has well-regarded luxury lodges near its main parks, including Bwindi Lodge and Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp near Bwindi, and Mweya Safari Lodge in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Are there luxury lodges right next to the gorilla trekking sectors?

Yes — each of Bwindi’s four sectors and the area around Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park have at least one high-end lodge positioned close to the trailhead, several with direct forest or volcano views.

Are these reviews genuine?

Yes — every review on this page is submitted directly by a guest after their own safari with us, through a private link only they receive. None are written by Offmap Safaris, and each is checked before it’s published.

Can a Mara river crossing be guaranteed on a specific date?

No — a river crossing is genuinely wild behaviour, not a scheduled event, so it cannot be guaranteed for a fixed date even within the July to October peak season. A guide who reads herd behaviour on the ground improves your odds considerably.

Can a wellness safari still include gorilla trekking or game drives?

Yes — most travellers combine a slower, longer stay at one or two anchor destinations with standard game drives or primate trekking elsewhere in the same itinerary, rather than giving up wildlife viewing altogether.

Can I add golden monkey tracking to a Rwanda gorilla trekking safari?

Yes — golden monkey tracking in Volcanoes National Park’s bamboo forest is shorter and generally easier than gorilla trekking, and is a popular second activity on the same visit without needing another gorilla permit.

Can I ask questions before booking?

Yes. Use the planning form, WhatsApp or email to discuss your plans before making a booking decision.

Can I choose which Bwindi sector I trek in?

You can express a preference, but final sector assignment depends on permit availability for your travel dates — we secure the best available match to your preference and fitness level.

Can I climb Kilimanjaro and go on safari through the same airport?

Yes — Kilimanjaro International Airport serves both. Most climbers and safari travellers arrive through the same gateway and base themselves in Arusha or Moshi before splitting off to the mountain or the northern safari circuit.

Can I combine a Kenya safari with the coast?

Yes — pairing a Maasai Mara or Amboseli safari with a few days on the Kenyan coast (Diani, Watamu or Lamu) is a well-established combination, giving a wildlife-then-beach structure to the safari.

Can I combine a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar?

Yes, this is one of the most popular East African combinations — a Serengeti or Ngorongoro safari followed by several days on Zanzibar’s beaches, connected by a short flight.

Can I combine birding with gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

Yes — Volcanoes National Park itself holds around 200 species including 17 Albertine Rift Endemics, so birding happens naturally alongside gorilla and golden monkey trekking without needing a separate stop.

Can I combine Rwanda and Uganda in one safari?

Yes, this is a popular combination. Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda sits close to Uganda’s southwest, so gorilla trekking in one country and chimpanzee tracking or savannah game drives in the other can be combined without excessive travel time.

Can I combine Rwanda and Uganda in one trip?

Yes, this is a popular combination. Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda sits close to Uganda’s southwest, so gorilla trekking in one country and chimpanzee tracking or savannah game drives in the other can be combined without excessive travel time.

Can I combine Volcanoes National Park with Akagera on one safari?

Yes — Rwanda’s compact size makes it straightforward to combine a Volcanoes National Park gorilla trek with a stay at Akagera National Park or Nyungwe National Park on the same itinerary.

Can I do a budget gorilla safari in Rwanda?

It’s harder, since Rwanda’s permit alone costs around USD 1,500 regardless of accommodation choice — for a genuinely budget-conscious gorilla safari, Uganda (around USD 800 per permit) with simple accommodation is the stronger option.

Can I do a safari in under a week?

Yes — a focused 4 to 5 day gorilla trekking safari, or a similar short window built around one specific park or experience, is genuinely realistic, though it leaves less room for combining multiple destinations or experiences within the same safari.

Can I do gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking in one safari?

Yes — Uganda in particular makes this straightforward, with Bwindi (gorillas) and Kibale (chimpanzees) both reachable within the same southwestern circuit.

Can I do gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking on the same Uganda safari?

Yes — Kibale National Park, Uganda’s leading chimpanzee tracking destination, sits within reach of Bwindi, making the combination one of the most popular structures for a Uganda primate safari.

Can I fly directly between the Serengeti and Ruaha in Tanzania?

Yes — via charter or scheduled light-aircraft connections, flying is the standard way to link the northern Serengeti-Ngorongoro circuit with remote southern parks such as Ruaha and Nyerere, which are impractical to combine by road.

Can I fly directly into Mombasa instead of Nairobi?

Yes — Moi International Airport has direct and connecting international flights, making it a practical entry point for a coast-focused safari or a safari-and-beach combination that starts or ends on the coast.

Can I fly into one country and out of another?

Yes — this is common on multi-country itineraries, for example flying into Rwanda for gorilla trekking and out of Kenya after a Maasai Mara safari. Tell us when planning and we will account for it in your routing.

Can I leave a review if I booked a while ago?

Yes — contact us and we’ll send you a review link even if it’s been some time since your safari.

Can I see both the calving season and the Mara river crossings on one safari?

Not on a single safari, since they happen roughly six months apart in different parts of the ecosystem — but both are realistic to plan separate safaris around, and we can help you decide which better matches what you want to see.

Can I see gorillas and golden monkeys on the same safari?

Yes — golden monkey tracking is offered at Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, both within the same Virunga range as gorilla trekking, and is usually added as a shorter second activity.

Can I see the Big Five in Rwanda?

Yes — Akagera National Park holds lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and both black and white rhino, making Rwanda one of the few countries where Big Five game viewing and gorilla trekking are both possible on a single itinerary.

Can Offmap Safaris create a tailor-made itinerary?

Yes. Safari itineraries can be shaped around your interests, pace, travel style, dates and preferred level of accommodation.

Can wellness activities be added to a standard safari?

Yes — a Zanzibar beach stay, a spa-equipped lodge, or simply a slower-paced itinerary with fewer transfers can all be built into an otherwise standard wildlife or primate safari on request.

Can you arrange a family safari with children?

Yes — certain parks, lodges and experiences suit families with children better than others (age limits apply to gorilla trekking, for example), and we can shape an itinerary with that in mind.

Can you arrange a safari for a solo traveller?

Yes, we regularly plan safaris for solo travellers, either as a private itinerary or joining scheduled small-group departures where available.

Can you build a safari around my budget?

Yes — tell us your approximate budget alongside your dates and interests, and we’ll shape an itinerary, accommodation style and destination mix that genuinely fits it, rather than starting from a fixed package and asking you to stretch to meet it.

Can you plan a family safari with young children?

Yes — we shape family itineraries around realistic pacing, family-friendly accommodation and activities with genuine appeal for children, though gorilla trekking specifically has a strict minimum age of 15 regardless of how the rest of the safari is planned.

Do I need a domestic flight in Rwanda?

Rarely — Rwanda’s small size means most itineraries combine Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe, and Akagera entirely by road, with Kigali International Airport as the single arrival and departure point.

Do I need a separate permit for gorilla and chimpanzee tracking?

Yes — gorilla and chimpanzee permits are issued and priced separately, even within the same country, since they apply to different parks, forests and activities.

Do I need a visa for Uganda if I already have an East Africa Tourist Visa?

If your East Africa Tourist Visa was issued covering Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda, it is valid for entry at Entebbe. If you only hold a single-country Kenya or Rwanda visa, you will need a separate Uganda visa.

Do I need a visa in advance for Rwanda?

Not necessarily — Rwanda offers visa-on-arrival to all nationalities with no advance application required, alongside an e-visa option if you would rather arrange it before you travel.

Do I need a visa to transit through JKIA?

A short layover without leaving the airport does not usually require a visa, but requirements vary by nationality and length of stay — always confirm with the airline or Kenyan immigration before you fly, since rules can change.

Do I need a visa to visit Kenya?

Most nationalities need an eTA (electronic travel authorisation) for Kenya, applied for online before travel. Requirements vary by nationality, so confirm current guidance for your passport ahead of your safari.

Do I need a visa to visit Tanzania?

Most nationalities need a visa for Tanzania, commonly available as an e-visa applied for online before travel. Requirements vary by nationality, so confirm current guidance for your passport ahead of your safari.

Do I need a visa to visit Uganda?

Most nationalities need a visa for Uganda, commonly available as an e-visa applied for online before travel. Requirements vary by nationality, so check the current official guidance for your passport well ahead of your safari.

Do I need to fly between parks in Uganda?

Most Uganda safaris travel by road, but flying between Kajjansi Airfield and park airstrips such as Kihihi, Pakuba, or Kidepo can save significant driving time, particularly for reaching the remote Kidepo Valley National Park.

Do I need to visit Tanzania too, or is Kenya enough?

Kenya alone gives strong odds of the migration during its July to October window, plus year-round resident wildlife regardless of timing. Visiting both countries lets you follow more of the migration’s full annual circuit, including the calving season, which only happens in Tanzania.

Do I need travel insurance for a Tanzania safari?

Comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is strongly recommended for any Tanzania safari, particularly for remote southern circuit parks such as Ruaha that are reached mainly by light aircraft.

Do most migration deaths happen during river crossings?

No — while crossings are the migration’s most photographed moment, most of the roughly 250,000 wildebeest and 30,000 zebra that die during the migration each year die from predation away from the river, exhaustion, thirst or stampede injuries, not specifically from drowning or crocodile kills in the water.

Do your prices include international flights?

Safari pricing covers the itinerary itself — accommodation, park fees, permits where applicable, guiding and ground transport as specified — while international flights to and from East Africa are arranged separately by the traveller unless otherwise agreed.

Does a wellness safari include yoga or spa treatments?

Some lodges we use, particularly in Laikipia and on Zanzibar, offer yoga sessions or spa treatments on site, and we can build these in where available, but a wellness safari does not depend on them — the slower pacing and quieter destinations are what define the category, with spa or yoga access as a welcome bonus at some properties rather than a requirement.

Does Uganda have a tourist police unit?

Yes — the Uganda Police Force operates a dedicated Tourism Police unit, with officers stationed at key sites and along major tourist routes to support visitors.

How do I get from the Tanzania mainland safari circuit to Zanzibar?

Short scheduled flights connect Zanzibar with both Kilimanjaro International Airport and Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, making it straightforward to combine a mainland safari with a few days on the island afterwards.

How do I get to Zanzibar?

Zanzibar has its own international airport near Stone Town, served by direct international flights and short connections from Dar es Salaam and the northern safari circuit’s airstrips near Arusha and Kilimanjaro. A fast ferry also runs from Dar es Salaam, typically around two hours.

How do I know if a safari is multi-country?

Every Safari on the site is tagged with the country or countries it covers, and any safari spanning two or more automatically shows a “Multi-Country” label on its listing — you can also filter specifically for these under Safari type on the Safaris page.

How do I know which safari is right for me?

Compare destinations, duration, travel style and experiences, or contact us and we will help match your priorities with an itinerary.

How do I pay for my safari?

Payment details and schedule are confirmed as part of finalising your itinerary — typically a deposit to secure the booking followed by the balance ahead of travel, with specifics depending on the safari.

How do I start planning my safari?

Tell us your preferred destination, approximate travel dates, number of travellers and the experiences you are interested in. We can then shape a private or tailor-made safari around your priorities.

How do you collect reviews from clients?

After a safari is complete, we send a short invitation by email with a private link where the guest can write their own review, rate their experience, and optionally add a photo. A gentle follow-up goes out about a week later if we have not heard back.

How does a small-group safari differ from a private one?

A small-group safari joins a scheduled departure shared with a genuinely small number of other travellers, splitting the vehicle and guide cost and making it more affordable than a private safari, in exchange for a fixed itinerary and less control over daily pacing.

How does Offmap approach responsible travel?

We aim to design experiences that respect wildlife, communities, local cultures and the places travellers visit.

How far in advance should I book a gorilla permit?

As early as possible — ideally several months ahead, and well over six months ahead for travel in the peak June-September or December-February seasons, since permits are limited in number per day per sector and genuinely do sell out.

How far in advance should I book?

Booking lead time depends on the destination, season, accommodation and experiences requested. Earlier planning is especially useful for high-demand experiences and peak travel periods.

How far is Kigali Airport from Volcanoes National Park?

About 2 to 2.5 hours by road from Kigali International Airport to Kinigi, the gorilla trekking headquarters near Volcanoes National Park — Rwanda’s small size means this is usually done by road rather than by domestic flight.

How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through forest terrain that can be steep, muddy and humid, for anywhere from under an hour to several hours depending on where the gorilla family is that day. A reasonable level of fitness helps, and porters are available to assist with the climb.

How long does a Mara river crossing actually take?

The crossing itself is often over within ten to twenty minutes once it begins, though herds can gather and hesitate at the riverbank for hours beforehand before committing.

How long does gorilla trekking take?

Trekking time to reach a gorilla family varies from under an hour to several hours depending on where the group has moved to that day, followed by a permitted one hour with the gorillas once found. Overall, plan for most of a day including preparation and the return hike.

How long is the flight from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara?

Scheduled flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to the Maasai Mara’s airstrips take approximately 45 minutes, compared with a 5 to 6 hour road transfer.

How long should my safari be?

Most first-time safaris run 7 to 10 days, long enough to cover one country properly or combine two without feeling rushed — shorter 4 to 5 day safaris work well for a single focused experience like gorilla trekking, while 12 days or more suits a multi-country itinerary or a safari combined with Zanzibar.

How many bird species does Kenya have?

Kenya has recorded over 1,100 bird species, the second-highest country total in Africa after DR Congo, and around 11% of all bird species worldwide.

How many bird species does Rwanda have?

Rwanda has recorded 703 bird species, including 29 Albertine Rift Endemics found nowhere else in the world outside this narrow highland region.

How many bird species does Tanzania have?

Tanzania has recorded approximately 1,130 bird species, the third-longest national bird list in the African Bird Club region, thanks to habitats ranging from the Eastern Arc Mountains to the Serengeti plains and Zanzibar’s islands.

How many bird species does Uganda have?

Uganda has recorded 1,073 bird species — roughly 50% of Africa’s bird diversity and 11% of the world’s total, within a relatively small country.

How many days do I need for a Kenya safari?

A focused Maasai Mara safari can work in 3–4 days, while combining the Mara with Amboseli, another park or the coast generally calls for 7–10 days — we shape the length around what you want to include.

How many days do I need in Uganda?

A focused gorilla trekking safari can work in as few as 4–5 days, but 8–12 days lets you combine gorilla trekking with chimpanzee tracking, a savannah park such as Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls, and some rest time — we shape the exact length around what you want to include.

How many gorilla families can be trekked in Rwanda?

Volcanoes National Park has several habituated families spread across the Virunga volcanoes’ lower slopes — rangers assign trekkers to a specific family each morning based on fitness level and the family’s last known location.

How many mountain gorillas are left in the world?

Just over 1,000 mountain gorillas remain in the wild, found only in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo — the only great ape species whose population is currently increasing rather than declining, thanks largely to decades of conservation funded partly by trekking permits.

How many national parks and reserves does Kenya have?

Kenya has more than 50 national parks and reserves in total. Our guide covers the best-known safari destinations, including the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo East and West, Samburu, and Lake Nakuru.

How many national parks does Kenya have?

Kenya protects its wildlife across more than sixty national parks and reserves, an unusually extensive network for a single country — from the Maasai Mara and Amboseli in the south to Samburu and the arid northern reserves, each holding a somewhat different range of species.

How many national parks does Rwanda have?

Rwanda protects its landscapes across four national parks: Volcanoes National Park (mountain gorillas and golden monkeys), Nyungwe (one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, chimpanzees and a canopy walkway), Akagera (Rwanda’s savanna park, restored to hold the full Big Five) and the smaller Gishwati-Mukura.

How many national parks does Tanzania have?

Tanzania protects its landscapes across more than twenty national parks, alongside conservation areas and game reserves that together cover roughly a third of the country’s total area — one of the highest proportions of protected land of any country in the world.

How many national parks does Uganda have?

Uganda protects its landscapes and wildlife across ten national parks, ranging from the rainforest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (home to mountain gorillas) to the savanna of Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls, Uganda’s largest park.

How many wildebeest take part in the Great Migration?

Around 1.5 million wildebeest take part, alongside roughly 200,000 zebra and smaller numbers of gazelle and eland — together forming the largest overland movement of animals on Earth.

How much does a gorilla trekking permit cost in Rwanda?

Rwanda gorilla trekking permits, issued by the Rwanda Development Board, are priced separately from Uganda’s and are generally higher. We confirm the current official rate when planning your safari and can advise on combining Rwanda with Uganda if you want to compare or reduce overall permit costs.

How much does a gorilla trekking permit cost in Uganda?

Uganda gorilla trekking permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and priced separately from your safari cost. Permit prices and availability change periodically, so we confirm the current official rate and secure your permit as part of planning your safari — book several months ahead where possible, since permits for popular dates sell out.

How much does a safari cost?

Safari pricing varies considerably by country, accommodation style, group size and season — a shorter, camping-based itinerary sits at a different price point entirely from a longer, luxury-lodge itinerary combining multiple countries, so we confirm a specific figure once we understand your priorities rather than quoting a single blanket number.

How much is a chimpanzee tracking permit?

As of late 2026, Kibale National Park in Uganda costs around USD 300 for foreign non-residents, other Uganda forests range from around USD 80 to USD 200, and Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park costs around USD 90 — considerably less than a gorilla permit.

How much is a gorilla permit?

As of late 2026, a standard Uganda gorilla permit costs around USD 800 for foreign non-residents (with a low-season discount in April, May and November), and a Rwanda permit costs around USD 1,500 — we confirm the current official rate when booking.

Is a budget safari a lower-quality safari?

No — a budget safari uses simpler accommodation and transport to control cost, but the wildlife, guiding and (where applicable) permits are exactly the same as on any other tier. It’s a different balance of comfort versus cost, not a lesser experience.

Is a private vehicle included on a mid-range gorilla safari?

Typically yes — a mid-range gorilla safari usually includes a private vehicle and driver-guide throughout, giving you control over timing on trekking morning, which matters given how specific gorilla trekking logistics can be.

Is a wildebeest the same animal as a gnu?

Yes — “wildebeest” and “gnu” refer to the same animal. “Wildebeest” comes from Afrikaans for “wild beast,” while “gnu” is thought to imitate the deep call the herds make.

Is Bwindi good for birding as well as gorilla trekking?

Yes — Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has been rated Africa’s number one birding site by the African Bird Club, so a gorilla trekking safari there is also a genuinely strong birding safari.

Is chimpanzee tracking harder than gorilla trekking?

It can be, since chimpanzees move faster and range further through the forest canopy than gorillas, making the walking less predictable. Sightings are very likely but slightly less guaranteed than with habituated gorilla families.

Is climbing Kilimanjaro part of a normal safari?

Kilimanjaro is usually planned as its own multi-day trek (typically 6–9 days depending on route) either before or after a separate safari itinerary, rather than combined into the same days, since it requires its own acclimatisation schedule.

Is East Africa safe for travellers?

Millions of travellers visit Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania safely every year on organised safaris. As with any destination, sensible precautions apply, and our guides and drivers are experienced in looking after travellers throughout the safari.

Is Entebbe Airport in Kampala?

Not quite — Entebbe International Airport is about 35km from Kampala, Uganda’s capital, near the town of Entebbe on Lake Victoria. It is Uganda’s only airport with scheduled international flights.

Is gorilla trekking in Uganda safe?

Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking groups in Uganda are always accompanied by armed Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, both for visitor safety and to protect the wildlife. Licensed tour operators also brief clients on local conditions before and during travel.

Is it common to travel on safari alone?

Yes — solo travel to East Africa is well-established and increasingly common, and a guided safari is naturally social even alone, with shared lodges, communal dining and guided activities providing regular company without requiring you to travel with anyone.

Is it safe for women to travel on safari alone?

Yes — a guided safari means a professional driver-guide accompanies you throughout every activity, and lodges across the region are well accustomed to hosting women travelling alone; women-only small-group departures are also available for those who’d prefer that dynamic from the outset.

Is Kenya safe for a safari holiday?

Kenya has decades of established safari tourism infrastructure, including a dedicated Tourism Police Unit, Kenya Wildlife Service ranger patrols, and widely used air ambulance services such as AMREF Flying Doctors for medical evacuation.

Is Kilimanjaro International Airport the same as Arusha Airport?

No — they are two separate airports. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) handles most international flights and sits between Arusha and Moshi, while Arusha Airport is a smaller, closer airstrip used mainly for domestic and charter flights.

Is Ngorongoro Crater accommodation worth the extra cost?

Crater rim lodges offer dramatic views and the shortest possible descent to the crater floor for game viewing, which many travellers find worth the premium, though lodges in nearby Karatu offer a more affordable alternative with a slightly longer drive.

Is Rwanda a safe country to visit?

Rwanda is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most orderly and well-policed destinations, with a visible national police presence and a nationwide CCTV network contributing to consistently low reported street crime in Kigali.

Is Rwanda good for a short safari?

Yes — Rwanda’s compact size means gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, golden monkey tracking and a Kigali city stop can realistically fit into 3–4 days, making it a good option if your travel time is limited.

Is Rwanda gorilla trekking more expensive than Uganda's?

Yes, generally — Rwanda’s gorilla permits, issued by the Rwanda Development Board, are typically priced higher than Uganda’s, reflecting a smaller number of permits issued per day. We can advise on combining both countries if you want to compare or spread the cost.

Is seeing the migration in the Mara guaranteed?

No sighting of wild animal behaviour can ever be guaranteed, but the Maasai Mara’s July to October window offers genuinely strong odds, and the Mara holds resident Big Five wildlife year-round as a strong fallback regardless of migration timing.

Is Stone Town worth visiting?

Yes — Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage old town with a genuinely distinct Swahili, Arab, Persian and Indian architectural heritage, best explored on a guided walking tour that also covers its history as a nineteenth-century trading and, more soberingly, slave-trading port.

Is Tanzania or Kenya better for a first safari?

Both offer excellent safaris across largely the same ecosystem, and the choice often comes down to which side of the Serengeti-Mara border better fits your dates and interests — we’re happy to talk through the trade-offs for your specific safari.

Is Tanzania safe for safari travel?

Tanzania’s major parks and reserves are patrolled by rangers and supported by the Tanzania Tourist Police Unit, with controlled entry gates and visitor registration at each major site.

Is the Maasai Mara good for birding, not just wildlife?

Yes — the Maasai Mara has recorded over 500 bird species, with riverine forest, open plains and marsh habitats supporting everything from turacos and hornbills to raptors and wetland species alongside its headline game viewing.

Is the Serengeti good for birding, not just the migration?

Yes — the Serengeti and neighbouring Ngorongoro Conservation Area hold strong savanna birding alongside their headline wildlife, including the range-restricted Fischer’s Lovebird.

Is there a minimum age for gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking in both Uganda and Rwanda has a minimum age requirement, typically 15 years old, set by the wildlife authorities for the safety of both visitors and gorillas.

Is there a separate visa for Zanzibar?

No — Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so the same Tanzania visa applies on the island as on the mainland. There is no additional or separate Zanzibar entry requirement.

Is white-water rafting on the Nile safe for beginners?

Yes — Jinja offers both family-friendly and advanced rafting sections, run with experienced safety kayakers and professional guides, so first-time rafters and experienced paddlers can both find a suitable stretch.

Is Zanzibar its own country?

No — Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago that is part of Tanzania, with its own government for local affairs while remaining under the Tanzanian union for matters like defence and currency. It uses the same visa and entry rules as mainland Tanzania.

Should I fly into Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro for a Tanzania safari?

It depends on which circuit you are visiting. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the better choice for the northern circuit — the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam is the better choice for the southern circuit — Nyerere National Park and Ruaha — or if Zanzibar is your main destination.

Should I use a licensed tour operator in Kenya?

Yes — using a licensed tour operator, and avoiding unlicensed taxis or tour touts in cities such as Nairobi and Mombasa, is standard safety guidance for visitors to Kenya.

What are Tanzania's most sought-after endemic birds?

The Udzungwa Forest Partridge and Grey-breasted Spurfowl, both found in the Eastern Arc Mountains, and the Pemba Green Pigeon, found only on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago.

What counts as a "wildlife safari"?

A wildlife safari is the classic game-drive format — vehicle-based wildlife viewing across savannah parks and reserves such as the Maasai Mara, Serengeti or Queen Elizabeth National Park, built around a guide reading tracks and radio reports to find the best sightings each day.

What counts as an "adventure safari"?

Adventure safaris bundle more physically active or higher-adrenaline elements into a wider itinerary — whitewater rafting on the Nile, mountain climbs, quad biking or ziplining, added alongside rather than replacing the core wildlife or primate experience.

What currency should I bring?

US Dollars are widely accepted for permits, park fees and many lodges across East Africa, alongside local currency for smaller purchases. We can advise on the right mix for your specific itinerary.

What destinations do you cover?

Offmap Safaris focuses on Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania, with tailor-made East African travel arranged around the traveller’s interests.

What do cultural experiences on safari usually involve?

Cultural experiences typically include visits to local communities, traditional dance or craft demonstrations, and conversations with local guides about the history and daily life of the area — genuine encounters rather than staged performances, where we can help arrange them thoughtfully.

What does a cultural safari usually include?

Community visits, traditional dance or craft demonstrations, and conversations with local guides about the history and daily life of an area — genuine encounters woven into a wider wildlife or primate itinerary rather than a safari built around culture alone.

What does a luxury safari include?

High-end lodges with individually designed rooms, a private vehicle and guide as standard, and exceptional service and dining — the wildlife and primate experiences are the same as any Offmap itinerary, the difference is in comfort, exclusivity and detail.

What does a mid-range safari actually include?

Comfortable en-suite lodges or tented camps with reliable hot water and electricity, usually a private vehicle and guide, and varied, well-prepared meals — the tier most travellers choose for their first safari.

What happens to my gorilla permit if I need to postpone my safari?

Once a gorilla permit is booked and paid for, it is non-refundable, and a new permit must be purchased for new travel dates — this is a fixed rule of the Uganda Wildlife Authority and Rwanda Development Board, not an Offmap policy.

What is a balloon safari?

A hot air balloon safari is a roughly hour-long dawn flight over the Maasai Mara or Serengeti, usually followed by a champagne bush breakfast — a unique aerial perspective on the plains rather than a guaranteed wildlife-viewing method, and normally booked as an add-on to a few days’ stay rather than a safari of its own.

What is a biking safari?

A biking safari covers everything from Rwanda’s multi-day Congo Nile Trail along Lake Kivu to a single day cycling freely among wildlife at Kenya’s Hell’s Gate National Park — the right route depends on fitness level and how much time you want on two wheels.

What is a birding safari?

A birding safari is built specifically around East Africa’s birdlife — over 1,000 recorded species across the region — with a different pace and timing from a standard wildlife safari, usually combined with primate trekking or a broader wildlife itinerary rather than standing entirely alone.

What is a culinary safari?

A culinary safari weaves food into a wider itinerary — market visits, cooking demonstrations and regional specialities from Zanzibar’s spices to Uganda’s coffee farms — added to, rather than replacing, the wildlife and primate experiences most safaris are built around.

What is a multi-country safari?

A multi-country safari combines two or more of Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania into one connected itinerary — gorilla trekking in one country paired with classic savannah wildlife or beach time in another, sequenced by us so the flights, permits and logistics work as one safari rather than several separate bookings.

What is a photography safari?

A photography safari is paced around light rather than ground covered — longer stops at fewer sightings, timed for golden hour, with guides experienced in positioning vehicles for clean sightlines rather than simply finding wildlife.

What is a private conservancy and why does it matter for accommodation?

A private conservancy is land bordering a national park or reserve, such as the Maasai Mara, managed under a conservation lease with local landowners. Camps inside conservancies can offer night drives and off-road viewing not permitted inside the park itself.

What is a private safari?

A private safari means your own vehicle, guide and pace throughout, with no fixed group schedule — the itinerary genuinely bends around what you want rather than a group consensus.

What is a walking safari?

A walking safari swaps the vehicle for your own feet and an armed ranger’s guidance, reading tracks and smaller details a vehicle’s pace would otherwise miss — available in parts of Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley in Uganda, usually added to a few hours rather than an entire itinerary.

What is a wellness safari?

A wellness safari is a slower-paced version of a standard safari, built around fewer stops, longer stays and genuinely unstructured time, rather than a new activity of its own — the wildlife, guides and destinations are the same ones used across our other itineraries, just sequenced differently.

What is included in a safari price?

This varies by itinerary and is always confirmed in writing before booking, but typically includes accommodation, park fees, a guide and vehicle, and most meals during the safari — international flights, visas and personal spending are usually excluded unless specifically arranged.

What is included under "primate safaris"?

Primate safaris cover gorilla trekking, gorilla habituation, chimpanzee tracking and chimpanzee habituation — all forest-based, guide-led encounters with wild primate families, distinct from a vehicle-based wildlife safari.

What is the best birding site in Rwanda?

Nyungwe National Park, with 322 recorded species including the Red-collared Babbler, found safely only there within Rwanda — Akagera National Park is a strong second with 490 species thanks to its wetlands and savanna.

What is the best month to see the migration in Kenya?
