Couples Safaris

Romantic escapes, anniversaries and trips for two, beyond the honeymoon.

A couples safari is a journey for two people, planned around the way the two of you like to travel. It might mark an anniversary, a milestone birthday, a retirement or simply a long-awaited escape from ordinary life. Days begin with a quiet drive in soft light and end with a table for two under the stars. In between, there is room to talk, to watch, and to do nothing at all. No wedding is required, and no occasion is needed beyond wanting time together somewhere remarkable.

Couples and honeymoon safaris: how they differ

People often ask whether a couples safari and a honeymoon safari are the same thing. They overlap, but they are not identical. A honeymoon safari is built around a wedding: newlyweds, often travelling for the first time as a married couple, who want surprises, celebration touches and a slow, romantic pace from the first night. A couples safari covers every other pair of travellers, and the planning differs in a few useful ways.

  • Occasion. Honeymoons celebrate a wedding. Couples trips might celebrate an anniversary, a birthday, a promotion or nothing at all.
  • Experience level. Many couples have travelled together for years. They may prefer more adventure, longer days in the bush or a more active schedule.
  • Style. A honeymoon leans toward romance and ceremony. A couples trip can lean toward wildlife, photography, walking, birding or food, with romance running alongside.
  • Age and stage. Couples include retired partners, empty nesters, friends travelling as a pair and couples taking a babymoon before a child arrives.

If you are newly married, the honeymoon page is the better place to start. If not, you are in the right spot.

What makes a safari work for two

Good couples planning comes down to a handful of decisions. We make each of them with you, not for you.

  • Unhurried stays. Fewer lodge changes mean fewer packing mornings. Three nights in a place feels very different from one.
  • The right room. A private tent with a deck, a forest cottage with a fireplace or a villa with a plunge pool. We choose rooms for their setting and their privacy, not their size.
  • Your own vehicle and guide. With a private vehicle, you set the timetable. You can stay with a leopard for an hour or return to camp for a long lunch.
  • Shared moments. A gorilla encounter, a sunrise balloon flight over the Mara, a sundowner on a hilltop. We keep two or three standout experiences and let the rest breathe.
  • Time apart, if you want it. One of you may enjoy a spa session while the other goes birding. Good lodges make that easy.

Ideas for couples by country

Each destination offers its own version of a trip for two.

  • Uganda. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi, chimpanzees in Kibale and a Nile boat cruise at Murchison Falls make a varied and affectionate trip. See Uganda safaris.
  • Rwanda. A compact country with misty volcanoes, comfortable lodges and short drives. A long weekend with the gorillas is possible, and a week adds Nyungwe or Akagera. See Rwanda safaris.
  • Kenya. The Maasai Mara for big cats and the migration, with Amboseli for elephants against Kilimanjaro. See Kenya safaris.
  • Tanzania and Zanzibar. The Serengeti and the crater, then white sand and warm water on Zanzibar. See Tanzania safaris.

Occasions we plan around

Couples travel for many reasons. An anniversary safari might repeat a place that mattered to you or open somewhere entirely new. A milestone birthday deserves one remarkable day, such as a bush breakfast or a balloon flight. A retirement trip often favours comfort, good guides and steady pacing. A babymoon needs medical advice, a calmer route and careful choices about altitude and malaria, which we explain in our health and safety guidance and discuss with you and your doctor. A second honeymoon or a trip after a long illness might simply need space and warmth. Tell us the reason and we will shape the details to fit.

A typical day for two

A couples day follows the animals, not a timetable. You wake before dawn to coffee on the veranda, then drive out in the cool light while the predators are still active. By late morning you are back at camp for a long breakfast, a swim or a nap. Afternoons might hold a boat cruise, a village visit or a second drive, and evenings end with a fire and a quiet dinner. On gorilla days the schedule bends around the trek, and the rest of the day is yours to recover and talk it over. We build in at least one slow day for every few active ones, because the best part of a trip for two is often the unplanned hour.

Beach finish or all bush

Many couples end a safari on the coast. Zanzibar offers warm water, spa treatments and a relaxed change of tempo after early starts. Some prefer to stay in the bush the whole time, with lake lodges, forest cottages and conservancy camps. Both work well. If you choose the beach, we plan the flights so you land with a full day to enjoy. Read more about safari and beach trips.

Welcoming all couples

Couples of every kind travel with us, and we plan without assumptions. Laws and social attitudes differ across East Africa, and we give factual guidance on each country so you can decide what suits you. Our guide to LGBTQ-friendly safaris sets out what we know country by country. You never need to share more than the room type you want, and we keep guest details private.

Honest planning notes

Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are non-refundable once issued, so we check availability and dates with you before booking. The most sought-after lodges for couples, including small forest and conservancy camps, often sell out six to twelve months ahead. We confirm one total price in writing, with no hidden extras. We also check current entry rules on our visa and entry page before you travel.

Questions about Couples Safaris

View all FAQs →
Are honeymoon safaris the same as couples safaris?

They overlap but are not identical. A honeymoon safari is built around a wedding celebration, with surprises and a slow pace. A couples safari suits any two travellers, including anniversaries, milestone birthdays, babymoons and long-awaited escapes, with the same privacy and the same careful pacing.
