Solo Traveller Safaris

A well-established, naturally social way to experience East Africa alone.

Travelling alone is one of the best ways to experience Africa. You decide what to see, who to meet and how long to stay, and a good safari makes sure you are never lonely or unsafe. Guided by a driver-guide who is with you from arrival to departure, you can walk into a rainforest to meet gorillas, sit at a lodge fire with fellow travellers and wake to a hippo grazing outside your tent, all at a pace you set yourself.

Safe, supported and sociable

Solo travel on safari is well established and increasingly common. Your guide manages the practical side, including transfers, permits, borders and timing, so you can focus on being present. Lodges and camps are used to welcoming guests who arrive alone, with communal dining and shared activities that make conversation easy. If you prefer more time to yourself, there are quiet verandas and private viewing spots. We choose properties known for warmth, security and thoughtful service.

Private or small group

  • Private safari gives you your own guide and vehicle and total freedom, with a supplement for travelling alone that we explain clearly at the quote stage.
  • Small group departures reduce the cost of the vehicle and bring company, with a few other guests on a shared route. See small group safaris.

Many solo travellers combine the two: a shared gorilla trek and a private week of game drives afterward.

Women travelling alone

A guided safari is a very comfortable way for women to travel alone. You are accompanied by a professional driver-guide for every activity, the lodges are well accustomed to women guests and we are glad to arrange a female guide or a women-only departure where available. We share practical advice on packing, dress and local customs before you travel, so you arrive confident.

Why solo travellers choose Offmap

We keep our itineraries personal. You deal with the same people from enquiry to return flight, and our team in Kampala is reachable by WhatsApp throughout. Prices are quoted in US dollars after we plan your route, with no hidden extras. Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are limited and non-refundable once issued, so we confirm availability against your dates before you commit.

Places that suit one traveller

Rainforest trekking in Uganda and Rwanda, the Maasai Mara in Kenya, the Serengeti in Tanzania and a quiet beach finish in Zanzibar all work beautifully for a single traveller. A first solo trip often begins with one country and grows from there.

Will I pay a single supplement on safari?

Many lodges charge a single supplement for a room used by one guest, and a private vehicle shared by one traveller costs more per person. We explain both clearly at the quote stage and can suggest small group departures that reduce the cost.
