A tailor-made safari begins with a blank page and a few honest questions. When can you travel, who is coming, what do you hope to see, and how do you like to spend a day? From your answers we design a route that exists for you alone: the right countries, the right number of nights in each place, the lodges that suit your taste and a pace that feels like a holiday and not an expedition. Nothing is lifted from a brochure, and nothing is added because it fills a slot.
What tailor-made really means
The phrase is used loosely across the travel industry, so it is worth saying exactly what we mean. Every Offmap itinerary is a starting draft, not a fixed package. The sample routes you see on this site show what is possible and how long things take. They are there to be changed. Swap a night in Murchison Falls for an extra day with the chimpanzees. Add Zanzibar at the end. Drop a long drive in favour of a short flight. Move the whole trip by three weeks because your dates shifted.
Tailor-made also describes how we price. You receive one total price for the whole journey, built from the parts you chose, with permits, park fees, transfers, lodging and your guide clearly accounted for. If you change a part, the total changes with it and you see why. We do not publish prices against sample itineraries, because the honest answer always depends on dates, group size and the level of accommodation you pick.
How the design process works
The process is short and unhurried, and you stay in control at each step.
- A first conversation. Tell us your dates, your group, your interests and any limits on budget, fitness or mobility. A message on WhatsApp is enough to begin.
- A first draft route. Within a couple of working days you receive an outline: where you sleep, how you travel between places and what you do each day.
- Refinement. We adjust the draft with you until it feels right. Most travellers go through two or three rounds. Nothing is booked until you say so.
- Confirmation. Once you approve the route, we confirm lodging, permits and transfers in writing, with one total price and a clear payment schedule.
- Support on the ground. Your driver-guide meets you at the airport, and our Kampala team stays reachable by phone throughout the trip.
What you can shape
Almost every part of the journey can be adjusted. The list below shows the choices that make the biggest difference, and why each one matters.
- Countries. Uganda for gorillas, chimpanzees and rivers. Rwanda for gorillas in a compact, easy country. Kenya for the Maasai Mara and Amboseli. Tanzania for the Serengeti and the crater. Zanzibar for a beach finish. Many of the best trips combine two of them.
- Pace. Some travellers want a lodge change every two nights. Others want four nights in one place and nothing to pack. Both are normal, and both are easy to plan.
- Accommodation level. Simple and comfortable, mid-range or luxury, and often a mix, with a special camp for the headline stay and a practical base elsewhere.
- Activities. Game drives, boat cruises, walking safaris, birding, cultural visits, balloon flights, spa days and quiet time. We never fill a day for the sake of it.
- Travel between places. Roads show you the countryside. Short flights save a day. We help you choose the mix that suits your time and your tolerance for long drives.
- Season. Dry months give easy wildlife viewing. Green months give fewer visitors and lovely light. We explain the trade-offs and let you decide.
Who tailor-made suits
Almost everyone, but a few groups gain the most. Families need pacing that respects children and age limits on certain activities. Couples often want privacy and a few well-chosen moments, covered in more detail on our couples safaris and honeymoon safaris pages. Photographers need time and light more than distance. Birders want specific habitats. Multigenerational groups need a plan that works for a ten-year-old and a grandparent at the same time. Solo travellers can choose private or shared arrangements. If you cannot easily fit a published itinerary, a tailor-made trip is how we solve it.
Tailor-made, private and small group: what is the difference?
These terms describe different things and can be combined. Tailor-made describes how the route is designed. Private describes who travels with you: your own vehicle and guide, with no strangers in the car. You can read more on our private safaris page. Small group describes a scheduled departure shared with a few other travellers, which you can learn about on our small group safaris page. Most of our guests choose a tailor-made route travelled privately, because it gives the most freedom. A tailor-made route can also be built around shared vehicles to lower the cost.
Tailor-made safaris by country
Each country has its own rhythm, and the best route changes with it.
- Uganda. Bwindi gorillas, Kibale chimpanzees, Queen Elizabeth tree-climbing lions and Murchison Falls on the Nile. Distances are manageable and a first trip works well in about ten days. Start at Uganda safaris.
- Rwanda. Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest and Akagera, all within a day’s drive of Kigali. A short, high-impact trip is possible in five days. See Rwanda safaris.
- Kenya. The Maasai Mara, Amboseli beneath Kilimanjaro and Samburu in the north, with easy flights between them. Explore Kenya safaris.
- Tanzania and Zanzibar. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, often followed by the Spice Island. Browse Tanzania safaris.
- Combined trips. Gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda with the Mara or Serengeti is a classic pairing. See our combined safaris for ideas.
Honest planning notes
Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are limited and non-refundable once issued, so we confirm availability and age eligibility before anything is paid. Lodges in the Mara and the Serengeti fill early for the migration months, and the best gorilla lodges often sell out six to twelve months ahead. Starting early gives you the widest choice, although shorter trips can still be arranged at shorter notice. Entry rules change, so we also check the current guidance on our visa and entry page before you travel.
