Budget Safaris

A budget safari is built to put as much of your money as possible toward the wildlife and experiences themselves: gorilla permits, park fees and a good guide. Accommodation and extras stay simple. It does not mean a lesser safari. It means a different balance of comfort and cost, and for many travellers, especially those prioritising gorilla trekking or a longer multi-country route, it is the sensible choice.

What a budget safari typically includes

Accommodation is usually a simple guesthouse, a basic en-suite lodge or a permanent tented camp rather than a high-end lodge: clean, comfortable and well located, without the design flourishes or private plunge pools. Game drives and treks use shared or smaller vehicles, meals are straightforward rather than multi-course, and the itinerary is built to keep daily costs low.

Where a budget approach works best

Gorilla trekking is the clearest example. The permit cost is fixed regardless of where you sleep, so choosing simpler accommodation around it is one of the most effective ways to control the overall cost without touching the experience that matters. The same logic applies to savannah parks such as Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls or Lake Mburo, where a well-guided game drive is the same wherever you sleep.

What to expect to compromise on

Rooms are smaller and simpler, some camps use shared bathrooms, wifi and hot water may be limited, and vehicles may be shared with other travellers on fixed days. None of this affects the wildlife, the guiding or the permits themselves.

Compare the three tiers

A budget approach pairs naturally with budget gorilla safaris, and with longer multi-country itineraries. It sits alongside mid-range safaris and luxury safaris, and you can mix tiers within one trip. Read our Travel Guide: budget safari in East Africa and how to choose a safari budget.

Questions about Budget Safaris

View all FAQs →
Is a budget safari a lower-quality safari?

No. A budget safari uses simpler accommodation and transport to control cost, but the wildlife, guiding and (where applicable) permits are exactly the same as on any other tier. It’s a different balance of comfort versus cost, not a lesser experience.

What is the cheapest way to do a gorilla safari?

Choose Uganda over Rwanda (around USD 800 versus USD 1,500 per gorilla permit), keep the itinerary to a focused 4-5 days, and choose simpler accommodation in Bwindi’s Buhoma sector; the permit cost stays the same regardless.
