Kenya Tanzania Safaris

Kenya and Tanzania share the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem across a shared border, and combining them is the classic way to follow the wildebeest migration’s cross-border movement or simply see both countries’ best-known parks in one trip.

How the route works

The Maasai Mara and Serengeti sit close enough that some itineraries cross overland at the Isebania or Sirari border points, though flying between Nairobi or the Mara’s airstrips and Tanzania’s northern circuit is more common for a smoother trip. Ngorongoro Crater and Amboseli’s Kilimanjaro views are natural additions on either side.

Why this pairing works well

Since the two parks are ecologically one continuous system, migration timing matters here more than for most combinations (broadly, the Mara from July to October and the southern Serengeti from December to March) and we help time the route around whichever phase you most want to see.

Why combine Kenya and Tanzania

The Maasai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania are one ecosystem divided by a border, and the wildebeest cross it in both directions each year. Combining the two countries lets you follow the Great Migration across both sides, with the Mara River crossings in the north, the open plains of the central Serengeti and the calving grounds in the south. Add Amboseli for elephants, Ngorongoro Crater for dense wildlife and Tarangire for baobabs.

Sample Kenya and Tanzania routes

A ten day route: Nairobi, three nights in the Mara, then a flight or road transfer to Arusha, Tarangire, Ngorongoro and two nights in the Serengeti. A twelve to fourteen day route adds Amboseli, a balloon flight and a Zanzibar finish. Read our Kenya migration guide and Tanzania migration guide.

Getting between Kenya and Tanzania

Roads and flights link the two countries. Nairobi to Arusha takes several hours by road across the Namanga border, and Kilimanjaro is a short flight from Nairobi. Direct links from the Mara to the Serengeti by air are possible on some schedules. Border rules and schedules change, so we plan the crossing and check requirements before you travel.

Best time for Kenya and Tanzania together

From July to October the herds are in the north, so the Mara River crossings are the headline. From December to March they calve in the south around Ndutu. In between they move through the central and western Serengeti. A cross-border trip lets you choose the best camps for the month. Read our wildebeest page and Mara river crossings guide.

Where to stay

See our accommodation in Kenya and accommodation in Tanzania guides, and the tier pages for luxury in Kenya and mid-range in Tanzania. Mobile camps follow the herds.

Visas, permits and practical notes

Kenya and Tanzania have separate visa arrangements, so check our visa and entry guide. Our health and safety page covers vaccines and malaria. Flights between airstrips have baggage limits, so pack soft bags.

Why plan it with Offmap Safaris

We plan both sides of the migration in one itinerary, with one total price and a WhatsApp contact at +256 701 243 304. Read about Kenya safaris and Tanzania safaris, then tell us your dates.

What you will see in Kenya

Kenya's Mara has lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants and the river crossings from July to October. Amboseli has elephants under Kilimanjaro, and Laikipia has rhinos and wild dogs. Read our Big Five guide and lions page.

What you will see in Tanzania

Tanzania has the Serengeti plains, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire's elephants and baobabs, Manyara's flamingos and the calving grounds in the south. Read our Great Migration page and elephants page.

Choosing camps by month

Camp position decides the trip. In July to October, the north and the Mara River are best. From December to March, the south and Ndutu. In between, the central and western Serengeti. Mobile camps follow the herds. We pick camps by month, not just by name, and tell you what you trade off.

Pace, fitness and what to pack

This route is vehicle-based and relaxed, with early starts. Pack layers, a warm fleece for crater mornings, sun protection and a soft bag, because light aircraft have baggage limits.

Questions we are asked most

Guests ask whether to cross the border by road or air, and we usually advise air for time. They ask about the best month, and the answer depends on what you want to see. They ask about children, and most camps welcome them with age limits on some activities. Our family safaris and safari budgets guide pages help.

Adding Zanzibar or Rwanda

Many guests finish on Zanzibar, or add a gorilla trek in Rwanda or Uganda. See our safari and beach page and gorilla tours.

A day-by-day shape for ten days

Day one is Nairobi arrival. Days two to four are the Mara. Day five is the road or flight to Arusha. Day six is Tarangire. Day seven is Ngorongoro. Days eight and nine are the Serengeti. Day ten is departure from Kilimanjaro or a Zanzibar extension. We shift days to match the herds and the camps.

How the price is built

The price of a Kenya and Tanzania safari is driven by the camp category and season in each country, park and conservation fees, the transfers or flights between countries, any balloon flights and your lodging level. Itineraries show no prices, and we give you one clear total for your dates.

What each half feels like

Both halves are open, vehicle-based and full of wildlife, but they feel different. The Mara is compact and dense with predators, and the conservancies feel private. The Serengeti is vast and quiet, and the herds seem endless. Ngorongoro adds the drama of a crater, and Amboseli adds Kilimanjaro as a backdrop. Together they give you a fuller picture of the same ecosystem.

Tips from our planners

Plan the border crossing carefully: a flight via Nairobi and Kilimanjaro is often easiest, and the road via Namanga is an alternative with a long day. Pack one soft bag for light aircraft, a warm layer for crater mornings and binoculars.
