Gorilla Tours Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park Gorilla Trekking Tours

Gorilla tours in Rwanda are among the easiest and most polished in Africa. Volcanoes National Park lies about two hours from Kigali on good roads, the organisation is excellent, and the surrounding area offers golden monkeys, volcano hikes and some of Africa's finest lodges. A Rwanda gorilla tour can be as short as three days, and it combines easily with Nyungwe, Akagera or Uganda. This page explains how a Rwanda gorilla tour works, how to plan it and how Offmap Safaris builds it for you.

How a Rwanda gorilla tour works

Your tour is built around one permit date. You arrive in Kigali, travel to Musanze, meet at the park headquarters at Kinigi for a briefing, then trek to a habituated gorilla family and spend one hour with them. Rangers, trackers and porters support the day, and you return to your lodge by afternoon. Around this we arrange transfers, accommodation, a driver guide and extras. Because Rwanda is small, you can fit more into a short trip.

Why choose Rwanda for gorilla tours

Rwanda is compact, safe and well organised. Kigali has an international airport, roads are good, and the lodge scene is strong. Treks vary from short to demanding depending on the family assigned. The permit cost is higher than in Uganda, which makes Rwanda a premium destination, but the experience is the same hour with the same species. Read our gorilla trekking in Rwanda page and Volcanoes guide.

Popular Rwanda gorilla tour lengths

A three or four day tour covers Kigali, the gorilla trek and a golden monkey or volcano hike. A five to seven day tour adds Nyungwe for chimpanzees and canopy walks, or Akagera for a savanna safari. An eight to ten day tour can add Uganda for a second trek and Queen Elizabeth or Kibale. We build each tour around your dates and priorities.

Golden monkeys and other add-ons

Many guests add golden monkey tracking in the same park. Read our golden monkey page. Other add-ons include the Dian Fossey tomb hike, volcano climbs, Twin Lakes, Kigali city tours and community visits. See our Nyungwe guide and Akagera guide.

Lodges for a Rwanda gorilla tour

Our accommodation guides cover luxury, mid-range and budget options. Many guests choose a luxury lodge for the volcano nights and simpler stays elsewhere. We also offer luxury gorilla safaris, mid-range gorilla safaris and budget gorilla safaris.

Permits and when to go

Permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board, are limited each day and are non-refundable. Book six to twelve months ahead for June to September and December to February. Gorillas can be tracked all year. Read our gorilla permits page and permit checklist.

Preparing for your trek

Bring waterproofs, sturdy boots, gloves, long sleeves and trousers, insect repellent and a day pack. Hire a porter. Treks can be steep and muddy at altitude, so fitness helps. Follow ranger rules and keep your distance. Read our health and safety page and visa guide.

Why book your Rwanda gorilla tour with us

Offmap Safaris plans gorilla tours across Uganda and Rwanda, which means we can compare both honestly and combine them. We handle permits, lodges, transfers and extras, and we give you one total price and a named contact on WhatsApp. Read about Rwanda safaris and our mountain gorilla guide.

Sample Rwanda gorilla tour routes

A three day route: arrive in Kigali, drive to Musanze, trek the next morning, return to Kigali. A five day route: add golden monkey tracking and a Dian Fossey hike. A seven day route: add Nyungwe for chimpanzees and canopy walk, then back to Kigali. A nine day route: add Akagera for game drives and a boat trip. Each can be done at a range of levels, and we adjust lodging to your preferences.

If you wish to extend to Uganda, the border crossing at Cyanika takes you to Kisoro and Bwindi's southern sectors.

Questions we are asked most

Guests ask if the permit price is worth it, and we answer honestly with a comparison to Uganda for your dates. They ask about trek difficulty, which varies by family. They ask about children, and the minimum age is fifteen. They ask about weather, and the answer is that mornings can be cold and wet, so layers matter. They ask about photography, and the rules allow cameras without flash.

Our team answers on WhatsApp at +256 701 243 304 or by email at [email protected].

Rwanda gorilla tours with other countries

Rwanda is easy to combine with Uganda for a second trek and wider wildlife, with Kenya for the Great Migration and with Tanzania for the Serengeti and Zanzibar. We plan cross-border routes, handle the paperwork and make sure that your permits, flights and lodging line up. See our gorilla tours in Uganda and Great Migration page for more.

Flights from Kigali connect to Nairobi, Entebbe and Kilimanjaro, so a multi-country trip is simple.

What makes a Rwanda trek different

Rwanda's gorilla families live on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, in bamboo and montane forest with open views. Groups are small, and the park is well organised with clear briefings, trackers and porters. Some families live close to the boundary and others require a long hike, and the park assigns groups based on fitness. A visit to the Karisoke research centre area honours the legacy of Dian Fossey, whose work helped save the species.

Rwanda gorilla tours and communities

Rwanda shares a portion of tourism revenue with communities around the park, funding schools, clean water and health clinics. Lodges employ local staff, and cultural visits to nearby villages and cooperatives can be added to your tour. Ask us to include a community visit.
