Mid-Range Gorilla Safaris

A mid-range gorilla safari pairs the same fixed permit and trekking experience with genuinely comfortable, well-located lodges just outside Bwindi, Mgahinga or Volcanoes National Park; the tier most travellers choose for a gorilla trekking itinerary, since it adds real comfort without the premium cost of the top-end lodge scene.

Accommodation near the trekking sectors

Each of Bwindi’s four sectors, Mgahinga and the area around Volcanoes National Park have a solid range of mid-range lodges (comfortable en-suite rooms, reliable hot water, good food and often forest or volcano views) positioned close enough to the trailhead for an early, unhurried start on trekking morning.

A private vehicle and guide

Unlike some budget options, a mid-range gorilla safari typically includes a private vehicle and driver-guide throughout, meaning your own pace and schedule rather than a shared itinerary: useful given how specific gorilla trekking logistics can be.

Combining with chimpanzee tracking or savanna

Mid-range comfort travels well across a longer itinerary. Kibale for chimpanzee tracking, or Queen Elizabeth National Park for savanna game drives and tree-climbing lions, each with their own strong mid-range lodge options, making an 8-12 day combined safari genuinely comfortable throughout.

What a mid-range gorilla safari includes

A mid-range gorilla safari adds comfort and flexibility to the same permit and trek: a private vehicle and driver guide, comfortable en suite lodges close to your trailhead, meals as agreed, park fees and a well-paced route with a rest day after the trek. It is the tier most travellers choose, because it balances cost with a good night's sleep before and after a demanding day. See our gorilla tours page for how every tour is built around the permit date.

Mid-range lodges near the gorillas

Near Bwindi, Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge and Gorilla Safari Lodge are known mid-range options, with more choice in the Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo areas. Near Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Muhabura Hotel, Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel and Sambora Kinigi are well-regarded, with many hotels in Musanze town. Our guides to mid-range accommodation in Uganda and mid-range accommodation in Rwanda list lodges by park.

Choosing Uganda, Rwanda or both

Uganda offers more variety and parks to combine, while Rwanda offers a short, easy trip with excellent roads. Many mid-range guests trek in both countries. Read our pages on gorilla tours in Uganda and gorilla tours in Rwanda, and ask us for a comparison with one total price for each.

A sample mid-range gorilla safari route

An eight day Uganda route: Entebbe, Kibale for chimpanzees, Queen Elizabeth for a boat trip and game drive, Bwindi for the gorilla trek, then a rest day and return. A six day Rwanda route: Kigali, Volcanoes with a gorilla trek and golden monkeys, Nyungwe for chimpanzees, back to Kigali. A ten day combined route adds Uganda to Rwanda. We adjust the route to your permit date and interests.

Why a private vehicle matters

Gorilla days start early and depend on timing. A private vehicle and driver guide let you leave when you are ready, stop for photographs, and adapt if a trek runs long. Roads in Uganda are long, and a good driver guide makes the days easier. Read our Bwindi sectors guide to see how sector choice affects drive times.

Upgrading where it counts

Many mid-range guests upgrade only for the trek nights, staying in a better lodge at Bwindi or Volcanoes and keeping other nights simple. We tell you honestly where it changes the experience. If you want to go further, see our luxury gorilla safaris, and if you want to spend less, our budget gorilla safaris.

Permits, fitness and preparation

Gorilla permits are limited, non-refundable and tied to your name, so we confirm details before payment. Read our gorilla permits page and permit checklist. The minimum age is fifteen, and you should be able to walk for several hours at altitude. Our health and safety page and visa guide cover entry and health.

What trek day looks like

On trek morning you eat an early breakfast, collect a packed lunch and drive to the park headquarters for a briefing. Rangers assign you to a habituated gorilla family, and trackers go ahead to find them. The walk can take one hour or most of a day, depending on where the family spent the night. You spend one hour with the gorillas, keeping a distance of seven metres, with no flash photography and a mask if you have a cold. After the trek you receive a certificate, and you return to your lodge for a late lunch, a hot shower and a rest.

Seasons and booking

Gorillas can be tracked all year. The drier months of June to September and December to February are easier underfoot and the busiest, so permits and lodges sell out early. The wetter months of March to May and October to November are greener and quieter, with muddier trails and often better availability. We recommend the month that suits your priorities and tell you what you trade off.

Book four to eight months ahead for the dry seasons, because the best mid-range lodges near the trailheads are small.

Questions we are asked most

Guests ask whether mid-range lodges are close enough to the trailhead, how long the drives are and whether rooms have hot water. In general the lodges we use are within an hour of the trailhead, rooms are en suite with hot water in the morning and evening, and meals are good. They ask about fitness: you need to walk for several hours at altitude, and porters help. They ask about families: the minimum age is fifteen, and our family safaris page explains how we plan for mixed ages. Reach our team on WhatsApp at +256 701 243 304 or at [email protected]. We also confirm in writing exactly what is included before you pay, so there are no surprises at the gate or at the lodge.
