Kenya Rwanda Safaris

Kenya’s classic savannah wildlife and Rwanda’s mountain gorillas sit closer together than most travellers expect; a direct flight between Nairobi and Kigali takes roughly two and a half hours, making this one of the most efficient two-country combinations available anywhere in East Africa.

How the route works

Most itineraries open with several days in Kenya’s Maasai Mara or Amboseli for classic game drives, then fly to Kigali for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, or the reverse, starting with the gorillas while energy and permits allow, then unwinding into the Mara’s open plains. Either order works; the choice usually comes down to which experience you’d rather build the trip’s momentum toward.

Why this pairing works well

The two countries offer genuinely different registers of safari: wide-open savannah versus dense, misted forest; vehicle-based game drives versus a physical trek on foot. So the combination rarely feels repetitive, and the short flight keeps travel time from eating into the trip itself.

Why combine Kenya and Rwanda

Kenya and Rwanda give you the two halves of the classic East African dream in one trip: the open savanna of the Maasai Mara and the misted volcano forest of Volcanoes National Park. One is about big skies, big cats and, in season, the Great Migration. The other is about a single hour face to face with a mountain gorilla family. Because the two registers are so different, the trip never feels repetitive, and the flight between Nairobi and Kigali is short enough that you lose very little time. Read about Kenya safaris and Rwanda safaris to see what each country offers.

Sample Kenya and Rwanda routes

A seven day route might give four nights to the Mara, with morning and afternoon drives and an optional balloon flight, then a flight to Kigali, a night in Musanze and the gorilla trek on the final day. A ten day route adds Amboseli for elephants against Kilimanjaro, or Nyungwe in Rwanda for chimpanzees. A twelve to fourteen day route can add Laikipia, Akagera or golden monkey tracking. Whichever length you choose, the gorilla permit date is the fixed point, so we book it first and build the rest around it. See our Rwanda gorilla tours page for how the trek day works.

Getting between Kenya and Rwanda

Nairobi and Kigali are connected by a flight of roughly two and a half hours, which is why this is one of the most efficient two-country combinations available. Flight days and times change, so we build the itinerary around the current schedule and leave a buffer night on the Rwanda side before the trek. Kenya's internal airstrips connect the Mara and Amboseli to Nairobi, so a typical trip uses a light aircraft in Kenya and a scheduled flight between countries. Our team handles all connections and transfers.

Best time for Kenya and Rwanda together

The Mara is at its busiest from July to October when the migration is in Kenya, and these are also dry months in Rwanda, which makes them the classic combined window. The Rwanda gorillas can be trekked all year, so you can choose the Kenya season you most want and fit Rwanda around it. January and February are another good pairing, with dry weather in both countries and calving season in southern Tanzania if you extend. Book the Mara camps nine to twelve months ahead for July to October, and read our Kenya migration guide to match camp and month.

Accommodation on a Kenya and Rwanda safari

Many guests balance the trip, choosing a luxury lodge near the volcanoes and a mid-range or conservancy camp in the Mara, or the reverse. See our guides to accommodation in Kenya and accommodation in Rwanda, and the tier pages for luxury in Kenya and luxury in Rwanda. We tell you honestly where spending more changes the experience.

Visas, permits and practical notes

Kenya and Rwanda are both covered by the East Africa Tourist Visa, but rules change, so check our visa and entry guide before you travel. The gorilla permit is limited, non-refundable and tied to your name and date. Read our gorilla permits page and health and safety page, and consider travel insurance that covers non-refundable permits and internal flights. Gorilla trekking has a minimum age of fifteen.

Why plan it with Offmap Safaris

We plan both sides ourselves, which means one planner, one total price and one contact on WhatsApp at +256 701 243 304. We handle permits, lodges, flights, transfers and guides, and we adjust the route if your dates shift. Read our safari budgets guide and safari duration guide to decide how long to stay, or tell us your dates and we will propose a route.

What you will see in Kenya

In the Mara you can expect lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles, with the wildebeest herds from July to October. Game drives run at dawn and late afternoon when the light is best and animals are active. Conservancy camps add night drives and walking safaris. Amboseli adds large elephant herds under Kilimanjaro, and Laikipia adds rhinos, wild dogs and northern species. Read our lions page, elephants page and Big Five guide for what to look for.

What you will see in Rwanda

In Rwanda the headline is the mountain gorilla trek, followed by golden monkey tracking in the same park. Nyungwe adds chimpanzees and a canopy walkway above one of Africa's oldest rainforests, and Akagera adds lions, rhinos, elephants and giraffes on a savanna with lakes. Kigali adds the genocide memorial, art and coffee. Read our mountain gorillas page, golden monkey page and chimpanzee page.

Pace, fitness and what to pack

The Kenya half is relaxed and vehicle-based, while the Rwanda half includes a trek of one to several hours on steep, muddy ground at altitude. Fitness helps, and porters are available. Pack light layers for the Mara, a warm fleece for the volcano mornings, waterproofs, sturdy boots, gloves and a soft bag, because light aircraft have baggage limits.

Questions we are asked most

Guests ask if the two halves feel too different, and the answer is that this is the point. They ask whether to trek first or last, and we usually suggest trekking first while energy is fresh unless the migration dictates otherwise. They ask about children: the minimum age for gorilla trekking is fifteen, though younger children are welcome in Kenya, and our family safaris page explains how we plan. They ask about honeymoons, and our honeymoon safaris page shows how this route works well for couples.

A day-by-day shape for ten days

Day one is Nairobi arrival and rest. Days two to five are the Mara, with a dawn drive, a long midday break and an afternoon drive each day, plus an optional balloon flight at sunrise. Day six is a morning drive and a flight back to Nairobi, then on to Kigali. Day seven is the drive to Musanze. Day eight is the gorilla trek, with a late lunch and a rest. Day nine is golden monkeys or a volcano walk. Day ten is the drive to Kigali and departure. We shift days to match the migration and the permit.

How the price is built

The price of a Kenya and Rwanda safari is driven by four things: the Rwanda gorilla permit, which is a fixed rate and the largest single item; the Mara camp category and season, with July to October the most expensive; the flights between Nairobi, the Mara and Kigali; and the level of lodging you choose. Itineraries show no prices, and we give you one clear total for your dates.
