Mid-Range Safaris

A mid-range safari is the sweet spot most travellers settle on: genuinely comfortable, well-appointed lodges and camps, private or small-group vehicles, good food, and an unhurried pace, without the premium pricing of the very top end of East African accommodation. For most people planning their first safari, this is the tier that delivers the fullest experience relative to cost.

What a mid-range safari typically includes

Comfortable en-suite rooms or tents with reliable hot water and electricity, often with a private veranda or view, a private vehicle and guide for most itineraries, varied and well-prepared meals, and lodges chosen specifically for their location relative to wildlife and activities rather than purely for budget. Many mid-range properties are family-run or small, independent lodges with genuine character rather than large chain hotels.

Where mid-range makes the most sense

This tier works well across the full range of safari styles (gorilla trekking, savanna game drives, cultural experiences and beach extensions in Zanzibar) since it keeps consistent comfort throughout a longer, multi-stop itinerary without the cost of luxury lodges at every stop.

What distinguishes it from luxury

The core experience (wildlife, guiding, permits) is identical to a luxury safari; the difference is in room design and size, the depth of personalised service, dining style, and small details like private plunge pools or butler service that luxury properties add. For travellers more focused on the safari itself than the surrounding comforts, mid-range is rarely a compromise.

Combining tiers

Many of our strongest itineraries mix tiers deliberately: mid-range for most of the route, with one or two nights upgraded to a standout luxury property for a specific highlight such as a gorilla trekking base camp or a final beach stay.

Mid-range safaris by country

In Uganda, examples include Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge and Gorilla Safari Lodge near Bwindi, Engazi Game Lodge in Queen Elizabeth and Pakuba Safari Lodge at Murchison Falls. In Rwanda, examples include Muhabura Hotel and Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel near Volcanoes, Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel and Ruzizi Tented Lodge in Akagera. In Kenya, examples include Masai Mara Sopa Lodge and Ashnil Mara Camp in the Mara, Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge and Ashnil Aruba Lodge in Tsavo East. In Tanzania, examples include Tarangire Safari Lodge, Lake Manyara Wildlife Lodge, Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge and Serengeti Halisi Camp. Our dedicated guides cover each country: Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania.

Mid-range gorilla safaris

Gorilla trekking can be paired with any accommodation level, because the permit is a fixed price. See our mid-range gorilla safaris, Uganda gorilla tours and Rwanda gorilla tours pages.

Sample mid-range routes

An eight day Uganda route: Entebbe, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, return. A six day Rwanda route: Kigali, Volcanoes, Nyungwe, Kigali. A seven day Kenya route: Nairobi, Mara, Amboseli. A seven day Tanzania route: Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti. Mix levels, spending more on the nights that matter most, such as Bwindi or the right Serengeti camp.

Combining countries

Many mid-range itineraries combine countries. See our multi-country safaris, Kenya and Rwanda, Uganda and Rwanda and Kenya and Tanzania pages.

How the price is built

The price of a mid-range safari is driven by the accommodation level and season, permits, park fees, transport and group size. Itineraries show no prices, and we give you one clear total for your dates. Read our safari budgets guide and safari duration guide.

Seasons

The dry months of June to October and December to February are the most popular and the most expensive. The green seasons are quieter and good value. Gorillas can be trekked all year. The Mara migration is July to October. Read our Great Migration page.

Where mid-range money goes furthest

Mid-range money goes furthest in locations where the setting matters more than the finishing: a lodge on a Bwindi ridge, a camp on the Mara River or a lodge on the Ngorongoro rim. Spend where views and wildlife access change the experience, and save on city nights and transit stops.

Private vehicle or shared

Many mid-range guests choose a private vehicle for flexibility, while others join a small shared departure to lower the cost. A private vehicle lets you pick your pace, photograph at length and leave early for the best light. Read our private safaris page and small-group safaris.

Mid-range for different traveller types

Families like mid-range because rooms are comfortable and meals are flexible. Couples gain privacy without paying for ultra-luxury. Seniors benefit from level paths and good service. See our family safaris, honeymoon safaris and senior-friendly safaris pages.

Upgrading selectively

A common approach is to book mid-range lodges for most nights and upgrade one or two, such as a luxury camp in the Serengeti or the Mara. This keeps the total sensible while giving you a highlight. Ask us to show the alternatives side by side.

What a typical mid-range day looks like

A typical mid-range day starts with tea and a morning drive, followed by breakfast at the lodge and a rest at midday. After lunch there is an afternoon drive or a boat trip, then a sundowner and dinner. Rooms are comfortable with private bathrooms, and most lodges have a pool. Guides are experienced and vehicles have a pop-up roof.

Choosing mid-range lodges well

Read recent reviews, check the location rather than the room, and ask about the guiding. A lodge on the edge of a park may save drive time and cost. We visit and review lodges ourselves and recommend those we trust. Read our accommodation guides for Uganda and Kenya.

A few more things to know

Our planners compare several mid-range lodges for each stop and explain the trade-offs honestly, such as location against price or facilities against atmosphere. You make the final choice with clear information, and we make the bookings and confirm every detail in writing before you travel.
