Accommodation in Uganda: Lodges & Camps Guide

Uganda’s lodges and camps are spread across its national parks, from the forested hills around Bwindi Impenetrable to the open savannah of Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls. Standards range from simple community-run guesthouses to award-winning luxury lodges, and most properties sit inside or just outside the park they serve, cutting down on drive time to morning game viewing or gorilla trekking departure points.

Budget accommodation

Budget lodges and campsites in Uganda offer clean, comfortable rooms or tents with shared or private bathrooms, simple home-style meals, and a genuinely warm welcome, often from community-owned or family-run operations. Around Bwindi, properties such as Buhoma Community Rest Camp and Lake Kitandara Bwindi Camp put trekkers within a short walk of the park headquarters. Around Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls, public campsites and basic bandas run by the Uganda Wildlife Authority are a common choice for self-drive and overland groups.

Mid-range accommodation

Mid-range lodges add private ensuite bathrooms, verandas with park views, and a full board dining experience, while keeping rates accessible. Examples include Chameleon Hill Lodge and Engagi Lodge near Bwindi, Enganzi Game Lodge near Queen Elizabeth, and Paraa Safari Lodge or Twiga Safari Lodge near Murchison Falls. This tier suits most first-time visitors who want comfort without a luxury price tag.

Luxury accommodation

Uganda’s luxury tier includes some of East Africa’s most celebrated lodges: Bwindi Lodge and Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp overlooking the gorilla forest, Mahogany Springs near Buhoma, Kyambura Gorge Lodge and Mweya Safari Lodge in Queen Elizabeth, and Chobe Safari Lodge above the Nile in Murchison Falls. These properties pair high design and personalised service with prime locations for wildlife viewing and gorilla trekking logistics.

Choosing where to stay

  • Staying close to a trailhead or park gate saves driving time on early starts, particularly for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking.
  • Bwindi has four trekking sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo), each with its own cluster of lodges: see our Bwindi Sectors guide to match accommodation to your assigned sector.
  • Lodges inside parks typically charge a conservation-linked premium; lodges just outside the boundary can offer similar views at a lower cost.

Choose your Uganda accommodation by budget

The simplest way to choose where to stay in Uganda is by budget, then by park. We have a dedicated page for each level: luxury accommodation in uganda, mid-range accommodation in uganda and budget accommodation in uganda. Each page lists named lodges and camps by park, explains what to expect and shows how we plan a safari at that level.

Many itineraries mix levels. Spend more where the stay shapes the experience, such as near the gorilla trailhead or in the right Serengeti or Mara camp, and keep other nights simple. We tell you honestly where a bigger spend changes the trip and where it does not.

Where to stay by park in Uganda

Accommodation in Uganda is organised around its parks: Bwindi and Mgahinga for gorillas, Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls for big game, Kibale for chimpanzees, Lake Mburo and Kidepo for quieter parks. Examples at the top end include Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Buhoma Lodge and Mount Gahinga Lodge near the gorillas, Mweya Safari Lodge in Queen Elizabeth and Nile Safari Lodge at Murchison Falls. In the middle of the market, examples include Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge near Bwindi, Engazi Game Lodge in Queen Elizabeth and Pakuba Safari Lodge at Murchison Falls. At the budget end, examples include Buhoma Community Haven Lodge near Bwindi, Kabatoro Guest House in Queen Elizabeth and Red Chilli Rest Camp at Murchison Falls.

Because gorilla permits and rooms must line up, we book both together. See our gorilla tours in Uganda and Bwindi sectors guide before choosing a lodge.

How we choose lodges and camps in Uganda

We choose lodges by location first, then comfort, service, food, guiding and what the property does for local people and conservation. We check properties ourselves or through trusted partners, and we change our choices when standards change. We book lodges together with permits, flights and transfers, and we give you one clear total price. If a property you like is full, we propose a close alternative and explain the difference.

Ask us about your dates, your group and your budget on WhatsApp at +256 701 243 304 or at [email protected], and we will recommend a mix of stays that suits you.

When to book accommodation in Uganda

Uganda has two main safari seasons: the drier months of June to September and December to February, and the wetter months of March to May and October to November. Gorillas can be trekked in either. Lodges near Bwindi are small, so book six to twelve months ahead for the dry seasons. Roads between parks are long, and a mix of road and fly-in legs keeps trips comfortable.

Types of accommodation in Uganda

Accommodation types in Uganda include forest lodges with views of the canopy, safari lodges overlooking the Kazinga Channel and the Nile, tented camps in the Ishasha sector, community-run bandas and guesthouses in the towns. Most lodges are full board, and we confirm what is included in each. Electricity is often solar, so charging sockets are shared at some places.

Whatever you choose, we book your stays together with permits, flights and transfers so that nothing is left to chance, and we give you one clear total price. See our safari budgets guide for how stay choices affect the overall cost of your trip.

Planning your stays around gorilla trekking in Bwindi, chimpanzees in Kibale and big game at Murchison Falls

Your accommodation plan should follow your itinerary, not the other way round. If your priority is gorilla trekking in Bwindi, chimpanzees in Kibale and big game at Murchison Falls, put your best nights there and use simpler stays on the way. Travel distances in Uganda shape how many nights you need in each place, and we advise on a realistic pace. Read our Uganda safaris page for routes and ideas.

Tell us your dates, group size and comfort level, and we will propose a sequence of stays with one clear total price. Our team replies on WhatsApp at +256 701 243 304, and by email at [email protected]. We would rather help you choose well than sell you the most expensive stay.
