Sossusvlei sits in the Namib Desert, one of the oldest deserts in the world, and is famous for its tall red sand dunes and for Deadvlei, a white clay pan studded with long-dead camelthorn trees. It is one of Namibia’s most photographed places.
What you can do here
Visitors climb dunes at sunrise, walk across Deadvlei, and explore nearby canyons and desert plains. Scenic flights and, in some areas, balloon flights give a view of the patterns in the sand.
When to go
The desert can be visited all year, but early morning light gives the dunes their best colour and the coolest temperatures for climbing. Midday heat can be intense in the warmer months.
Adding it to your safari
Sossusvlei pairs well with Etosha and Damaraland for a varied Namibian trip. We plan the routing and the lodges.
