The Okavango Delta is a vast inland wetland in northern Botswana, formed where the Okavango River spreads across the Kalahari instead of reaching the sea. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife regions, with islands, channels and floodplains that change with the season.
What you can do here
The Delta is explored in several ways: gliding through channels in a mokoro canoe, walking on islands with a guide, driving in the drier parts, and flying over it in a light aircraft to see the waterways from above. Wildlife includes elephant, hippo, lechwe and a wide range of predators and birds.
When to go
Water arrives in the Delta during the dry months, so July to October combines flooded channels with strong game viewing. December to March is the green season, with lower rates and excellent birding.
Adding it to your safari
The Delta is usually reached by light aircraft from Maun, and camps are small and remote. It combines well with Chobe and Victoria Falls. Tell us your interests and dates and we will plan the route.
