Lake Tanganyika is one of the largest and deepest freshwater lakes in the world, and Burundi’s north-eastern shore around Bujumbura has some of its best beaches, including Saga Beach, with clear water and a relaxed atmosphere.
What you can do here
The lake is for swimming, boat trips and simply unwinding after days of forest trekking. The shoreline and wetlands also attract birds, and the sunsets over the lake are a highlight.
When to go
Burundi has two rainy seasons, so the drier windows from June to August and December to January are the most comfortable. Temperatures stay warm around the lake all year.
Adding it to your safari
The lake is a natural end to a Rwanda primate safari, a few relaxed days before flying home. Visas for Burundi are arranged in advance, and we help with the planning.
