National Parks of Kenya

Kenya Wildlife Service manages over 50 national parks, reserves and marine protected areas across the country: far too many to list individually here. The parks and reserves below are the ones most safaris are built around.

  • Maasai Mara National Reserve: Kenya's best-known reserve, famous for the wildebeest migration and exceptional year-round big cat sightings.
  • Amboseli National Park: Famous for large elephant herds set against views of Mount Kilimanjaro across the Tanzania border.
  • Tsavo East National Park: One of Kenya's largest parks, known for its red-dust elephants and wide-open plains.
  • Tsavo West National Park: More rugged and scenic than its eastern neighbour, with volcanic hills, springs and strong rhino sanctuary.
  • Lake Nakuru National Park: A compact Rift Valley park best known for its birdlife, including historically large flamingo flocks, and rhino sanctuary.
  • Samburu National Reserve: A semi-arid northern reserve known for species found nowhere else in Kenya, including Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe.
  • Aberdare National Park: A dramatic highland forest and moorland park known for tree-hotel wildlife viewing and waterfalls.
  • Mount Kenya National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage site centred on Africa's second-highest peak, popular for trekking.
  • Nairobi National Park: A genuine savanna wildlife park within sight of Nairobi's skyline; a uniquely convenient first or last stop.
  • Meru National Park: A lush, less-visited park in central Kenya, the setting for the "Born Free" story.
