Diani Beach lies in Kwale County on Kenya’s south coast, about 30 km south of Mombasa across the Likoni channel. Stretching roughly 17 km from the Kongo River in the north to Galu beach in the south, it is one of East Africa’s best-known stretches of white sand and one of Kenya’s longest-established beach destinations.
The beach at a glance
- About 17 km of white sand, from the Kongo River to Galu beach
- Protected by an offshore coral reef, which keeps the shallows calm and clear at low tide
- Home to the indigenous Digo people, part of the wider Mijikenda community
- Tourism development here dates back to the mid-20th century, making it one of Kenya’s oldest beach resort areas
Kongo Mosque
At Diani’s northern tip stands the 16th-century Kongo Mosque, the last surviving ancient Swahili structure in the area and a reminder that the coast’s history stretches back centuries before the beach became a resort destination, connected to the wider network of Swahili trading towns along the Indian Ocean.
Reef and marine life
Diani’s fringing coral reef sits a short distance offshore, creating calm, shallow lagoons that are ideal for swimming and wading, with clear views of the sandy bottom at low tide. Beyond the reef, the open water supports snorkeling and diving, along with occasional dolphin sightings.
Things to do
- Swimming and relaxing in the calm, reef-protected lagoon
- Snorkeling and diving outings out to the reef and beyond
- Water sports including kitesurfing, windsurfing and deep-sea fishing
- Visits to the Kongo Mosque and Diani’s coastal forest patches, home to colobus monkeys
Practical information
- Reached by road from Mombasa via the Likoni ferry or the Dongo Kundu Bypass, completed in 2024, or by flights to Ukunda airstrip
- Year-round warm coastal climate, with the wettest months typically April to June
- A wide range of resorts and independent hotels line the beach, suiting both family and quieter getaways
Diani pairs naturally with a wider Kenyan safari as a coastal finish, or works well as a standalone beach break. Offmap Safaris can combine it with Tsavo or the Maasai Mara for a full Kenya route.
