Mid-range accommodation in Tanzania lets you enjoy the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara without paying for a top-tier camp. Tanzania has a wide choice of mid-priced lodges and tented camps, including mobile camps that follow the migration, and many are in excellent locations. This guide to mid-range accommodation in Tanzania explains what to expect, which lodges we use by region and how to plan a mid-range Tanzania safari that is comfortable and good value.
What mid-range means in Tanzania
Mid-range lodges and tented camps offer en suite rooms or tents, hot showers, a restaurant, a bar and friendly service, usually with shared game drive vehicles or private vehicles on request. They tend to be larger and more social than luxury camps, with a pool at many lodges. Standards are solid, and the locations are often excellent because the national parks have a limited number of sites. Mobile camps follow the herds and give you an authentic feel at a moderate rate.
Mid-range in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro
In the Serengeti, Serengeti Halisi Camp and Kati Kati Tented Camp are mobile camps that move between the central Serengeti and Ndutu, while Lahia Tented Lodge and Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge are fixed tented lodges often described as mid-range or upper mid-range. On the Ngorongoro rim, Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge is a classic mid-priced stay with crater views, and Ngorongoro Farm House offers a farm and coffee estate setting. Read our Serengeti guide and Ngorongoro guide.
Mid-range near Tarangire and Manyara
Tarangire Safari Lodge sits on a cliff above the river in Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara Wildlife Lodge overlooks the Rift Valley and the lake, and Endoro Lodge near Manyara and Tarangire is often the first stop. Tarangire is famous for elephants, especially in the dry season, and Manyara is known for its flamingos and tree-climbing lions. Read our Tarangire guide, Manyara guide and tree-climbing lions page.
When mid-range is the smart choice
Mid-range is ideal for families, small groups, first-time visitors and anyone who wants to spend on more nights or a balloon flight rather than a bigger room. It is also a smart choice in the Serengeti, where the herd position matters more than the room. A mobile camp in the right spot can beat a luxury lodge in the wrong one.
Every traveller to Tanzania does not need the same kind of stay, and many itineraries mix tiers: a budget stay in the park you care most about, then a luxury option elsewhere. Our Tanzania accommodation guide shows all three side by side, and our team will tell you honestly where spending more changes the experience and where it does not.
A sample mid-range route
A seven day route might be: Arusha, Tarangire for one night, Ngorongoro for one night, then three nights in the Serengeti, flying or driving back. A longer trip can add Lake Manyara and Zanzibar. We time the Serengeti nights to the herd position and book flights or road transfers accordingly. See our mid-range safaris page.
What to expect day to day
Days start early with a game drive, with breakfast back at camp or a packed breakfast in the field. Lunch is at the lodge, afternoons may be a rest or a second drive, and dinner is served at camp. Mobile camps have simpler facilities but a lovely closeness to the wild. Evenings on the Ngorongoro rim are cold, so bring a warm layer. Tips are customary, and we advise on amounts.
Questions we are asked most
Guests ask how mid-range compares with luxury in the Serengeti. The animals and parks are the same. The difference is service, privacy and style. They also ask about children, and most lodges welcome them with age limits for some activities. Our family safaris page explains how we plan.
Seasons and the migration
The Great Migration passes through Tanzania most of the year. The calving season in the south from about January to March draws predators, the central Serengeti is strong from April to June, the western corridor and Grumeti are good around May to July, and the north and the Mara River are best from July to October. Mid-range camps in each area are available, and mobile camps are well placed. Read our Great Migration page and wildebeest page for more.
Tarangire is at its best in the dry season from June to October when elephants gather on the river, and Ngorongoro Crater is good all year.
Mid-range plus Zanzibar
A mid-range Tanzania safari pairs easily with a beach stay. Zanzibar has resorts at many levels, and flights from Arusha or the Serengeti make the transfer simple. Plan at least three nights on the coast to rest after the safari. Ask us about a safari and beach combination.
Booking tips
Book four to eight months ahead, and earlier for July to October and January to March, when Serengeti camps in the right spots fill up. Ask about single supplements, child rates and whether game drives are in private or shared vehicles. We confirm all of this in writing and send you one clear total.
Packing and baggage
If you fly between camps, baggage is usually limited to a small soft bag per person. Pack light layers, a warm fleece for crater mornings, a hat, sun cream, binoculars and a camera. Laundry service at many lodges makes light packing easy. We send a full checklist after booking.
Tips for first-timers
Ask for crater-facing rooms at Ngorongoro, pack a warm layer for the rim, request early breakfast on drive days and bring a power bank. Keep valuables in the safe, and follow your guide's advice about night-time walking.
