Kenya is the home of the classic luxury safari, and its camps and lodges are some of the most celebrated in Africa. From tented camps beside the Mara River to lodges on the Oloololo Escarpment, private conservancies in Laikipia and elephant country at the foot of Kilimanjaro, Kenya offers a luxury stay for every taste. This guide to luxury accommodation in Kenya explains what luxury means, which camps and lodges we use by region, when to book for the Great Migration and how to combine a bush stay with the coast.
What luxury means in Kenya
Luxury in Kenya often means a tented camp with proper beds, en suite bathrooms, hot water and fine food, set in a private conservancy or a prime spot in a national reserve. Guides are experienced, vehicles are open, and activities often include night drives, walking safaris and balloon flights that are not permitted in the national reserves. Private conservancies limit the number of vehicles, which means better sightings and a quieter feel. Many luxury camps also work closely with Maasai landowners, so your stay supports local families.
Luxury camps and lodges in the Maasai Mara
The Mara is where most luxury guests spend their time. Angama Mara sits on the Oloololo Escarpment with views over the Mara Triangle. Mahali Mzuri, Mara Plains Camp, Cottar's 1920s, Sanctuary Olonana, Elephant Pepper Camp, Naibor Camp, Saruni Mara and Kichwa Tembo are well-known luxury choices in private conservancies or the reserve edges, while Mara Serena Safari Lodge, Sarova Mara Game Camp and Governors' Camp are long-established names. Read our Maasai Mara guide, the Great Migration page and Kenya migration guide to match camp and month.
Luxury in Amboseli, Laikipia, Samburu and Chyulu
In Amboseli, Tortilis Camp, Ol Tukai Lodge and Tawi Lodge offer elephant country with Kilimanjaro views. In Laikipia, Segera, Suyian Lodge, Lewa Wilderness, Porini Rhino Camp and Kicheche Laikipia suit guests who want rhinos, walking and horse riding, and see our Laikipia guide. In Samburu, Sasaab and Samburu Intrepids offer unique northern species, and the Samburu guide explains the area. In the Chyulu Hills, Ol Donyo Lodge and Campi Ya Kanzi offer horseback and walking safaris. Our Amboseli guide covers the elephants.
Nairobi and the coast
In Nairobi, Giraffe Manor is famous for its resident Rothschild's giraffes, and The Emakoko and Ololo Safari Lodge are luxury stays on the edge of Nairobi National Park. On the coast, Manda Bay in the Lamu archipelago, Hemingways Watamu and the beach resorts of Diani suit a barefoot ending to a bush safari. Ask us about a safari and beach combination.
When to book
For the Mara migration season of July to October, the best camps are booked nine to twelve months ahead. The calving and big cat season in the Mara and Amboseli's elephants are good in the shoulder months, when rates and crowds ease. Rains peak in April and May, and many camps close for part of that time. We book camps, flights and balloon trips together and send one clear total.
Every traveller to Kenya does not need the same kind of stay, and many itineraries mix tiers: a budget stay in the park you care most about, then a mid-range option elsewhere. Our Kenya accommodation guide shows all three side by side, and our team will tell you honestly where spending more changes the experience and where it does not.
A sample luxury route
A balanced nine day route starts with a night in Nairobi, flies to the Mara for four nights across two camps, continues to Laikipia or Amboseli for two nights, and ends on the coast or back in Nairobi. Fly-in flights between camps keep travel time short. Combine with Tanzania for a cross-border migration trip, or with Rwanda for gorillas, using our luxury safaris page and Kenya safaris guide.
Choosing between camps
Choose a camp by the experience you most want. Conservancy camps give you night drives and walking. Escarpment lodges give you views and access to the Mara Triangle. Amboseli camps give you elephants and mountain photography. Laikipia gives you rhinos and wild dogs. We discuss your priorities and match you to a camp rather than selling the most expensive.
Luxury with a purpose
Many camps on this page lease land from Maasai landowners and share revenue with local families, and some fund schools, clinics and rhino protection. Ask us which camps do the most for communities and conservation, because it varies, and we choose partners with a real record.
Activities from luxury camps
Luxury camps in Kenya often include more than game drives. In conservancies you can take walking safaris with Maasai guides, night drives to see aardvark, bush babies and leopards, horse riding, bush breakfasts and sundowners. In the Mara, balloon flights at dawn finish with a champagne breakfast on the plains. In Laikipia you can track rhinos on foot, see wild dogs and visit conservation projects. Tell us which activities matter to you and we choose camps that offer them.
Photography and families
Luxury camps suit photographers because private vehicles, extra time at sightings and expert guides make the difference. Many camps offer photographic vehicles with beanbags and camera mounts. Families are welcome at selected camps, some with children's programmes, and our family safaris and photography safaris pages explain how we plan.
Booking and payment
We confirm availability first, then send one clear total price. A deposit secures your camps and flights, and the balance is due before travel. Cancellation terms vary by camp, with stricter terms in the migration months, so we explain them before you pay.
