Mid-Range Accommodation in Uganda: Best Value Lodges for Safari and Gorillas

Mid-range accommodation in Uganda is where most of our guests land, and for good reason. Rooms are comfortable and clean, staff are friendly, meals are good and the lodges sit in the right places for gorillas, chimpanzees and big game, yet the cost is far lower than at the top end. This guide to mid-range lodges in Uganda explains what you get, which lodges we use in each park, where mid-range is the smart choice and where it is worth stretching, and how we put a mid-range Uganda safari together.

What mid-range means in Uganda

A mid-range lodge usually offers en suite rooms or cottages, hot showers, a restaurant with a set or a la carte menu, a bar, reliable service and a view or a good garden. Rooms may be smaller than at luxury lodges and there may be fewer extras, but the essentials are done well. Expect friendly local staff, packed lunches for trek days and clean, safe rooms. Many mid-range lodges are family run, which gives them real character, and the quality across Uganda has risen steadily.

Mid-range lodges near Bwindi

Around Bwindi, mid-range options include Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge and Gorilla Safari Lodge, along with a wider choice of simple lodges in the Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo areas. The key is the sector: choose a lodge close to your trailhead and you save hours of driving on trek morning. Read our Bwindi sectors guide and book your gorilla permit together with the room. Our gorilla trekking page explains the day.

Mid-range lodges in the savanna parks

In Queen Elizabeth National Park, Engazi Game Lodge and Engiri Lodge are well known mid-range choices, with Katara Lodge another option nearby. In Murchison Falls, Murchison River Lodge, Pakuba Safari Lodge, Sambiya River Lodge, Twiga Safari Lodge and Kabalega Wilderness Lodge suit guests who want game drives and a Nile boat trip without the highest rates. In Lake Mburo, Kigarama Wilderness Lodge, Mburo Safari Lodge and Mpogo Safari Lodge are well placed for walks and boat trips. Our park guides cover each: Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls and Lake Mburo.

Mid-range stays for chimpanzee tracking

In the Kibale area, Papaya Lake Lodge and Rwetera Safari Park are well regarded mid-range choices, and Fort Portal has a range of hotels. Chimpanzee tracking starts early, so staying close to the park gate matters. See our chimpanzee tracking guide and chimpanzee permits for how it works.

When mid-range is the smart choice

Mid-range suits most first-time visitors, families, groups and anyone who would rather spend on experiences, such as a gorilla permit, a second primate day or a boat trip, than on room upgrades. It is also a sensible choice in parks where the lodges are more about the location than the room. If gorilla trekking is the highlight of your trip, you may wish to upgrade only for your Bwindi nights. We help you decide that split.

Every traveller to Uganda does not need the same kind of stay, and many itineraries mix tiers: a budget stay in the park you care most about, then a luxury option elsewhere. Our Uganda accommodation guide shows all three side by side, and our team will tell you honestly where spending more changes the experience and where it does not.

How we plan a mid-range Uganda safari

Eight to ten days is a good length: Entebbe, Murchison Falls, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi. We use our own vehicles and driver guides, book permits and lodges together and keep the route realistic, because distances in Uganda are long. See our mid-range safaris and mid-range gorilla safaris for example routes.

A sample mid-range route

A common eight day route is: Entebbe, then north to Murchison Falls for two nights, across to Kibale for chimpanzees, south to Queen Elizabeth for a night or two, and on to Bwindi for gorillas. A shorter six day version flies to Bwindi or uses a direct drive from Kigali, which can pair well with a Rwanda stay. We adjust nights for your priorities, so a gorilla-first traveller might give Bwindi extra time and cut a park elsewhere.

What to expect day to day

Meals are included in most mid-range packages. Expect a good breakfast, packed lunch on trek days and a three course dinner. Rooms will be clean with mosquito nets, and many lodges have solar power with hot water in the evening and morning. Wi-Fi can be patchy. Laundry is often available at small cost, which helps on a longer trip. Staff are friendly, and a tip at the end of each stay is appreciated, with guidance from us on amounts.

Tips for choosing well

Look at the location first, then the room. A basic room next to the trailhead is better than a polished one three hours away. Check whether meals and drinks are included, whether the lodge can arrange early breakfast, and whether it has a lounge for rest days. We have stayed with or checked the lodges we use, and we change our choices when standards change.

Questions we are asked most

Guests often ask whether mid-range lodges have power for charging, whether rooms are safe and whether children are welcome. In general the answer is yes to all three, with the lodge's own rules for age limits on activities. Gorilla trekking has a minimum age of fifteen, so families with younger children usually plan other activities for them. Our family safaris page explains how we plan for mixed ages, and we are happy to check each lodge against your needs before you book.

How much should I budget for a mid-range Uganda safari?

It depends on the season, group size and route. Ask us for one total price for your dates and we will quote it clearly.

Is mid-range accommodation good enough for a gorilla trek?

Yes. Many guests stay at mid-range lodges near the trailhead and have a wonderful trek. Location matters more than luxury.

What are good mid-range lodges in Uganda?

Examples include Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge and Gorilla Safari Lodge near Bwindi, Engazi Game Lodge and Engiri Lodge in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison River Lodge and Pakuba Safari Lodge in Murchison Falls, and Papaya Lake Lodge near Kibale.

Do I need a visa to visit Uganda?

Most nationalities need a visa for Uganda, commonly available as an e-visa applied for online before travel. Requirements vary by nationality, so check the current official guidance for your passport well ahead of your safari.

How many days do I need in Uganda?

A focused gorilla trekking safari can work in as few as 4–5 days, but 8–12 days lets you combine gorilla trekking with chimpanzee tracking, a savannah park such as Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls, and some rest time. We shape the exact length around what you want to include.

How many national parks does Uganda have?

Uganda protects its landscapes and wildlife across ten national parks, ranging from the rainforest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (home to mountain gorillas) to the savanna of Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls, Uganda’s largest park.

How much does a gorilla trekking permit cost in Uganda?

Uganda gorilla trekking permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and priced separately from your safari cost. Permit prices and availability change periodically, so we confirm the current official rate and secure your permit as part of planning your safari: book several months ahead where possible, since permits for popular dates sell out.
