Hwange is Zimbabwe’s largest national park and one of its best for classic wildlife viewing. Much of the park is dry woodland and grassland, so animals depend on a small number of natural and pumped waterholes, which makes game viewing in the dry season especially rewarding.
What you can do here
Game drives are the core activity, and many camps have hides or platforms overlooking waterholes where elephant herds can be watched at close range, particularly late in the dry season. Hwange is also a strong birding destination, with a long checklist across both the dry season and the green months.
When to go
July to October is the strongest period for wildlife, as animals concentrate around the remaining water. The green season, November to March, brings afternoon rain, fewer visitors and excellent birdlife, though game is more dispersed.
Adding it to your safari
Hwange is easily combined with Victoria Falls, and the two together make a short but complete Zimbabwe extension. Tell us how long you have and we will suggest a routing.
