Jambiani lies on Zanzibar’s southeast coast, between the villages of Paje and Makunduchi, and remains one of the island’s more traditional coastal communities. With around 7,000 residents supported chiefly by fishing and farming, Jambiani has kept a quieter, slower pace than its more developed neighbours further north.
The village at a glance
- Located on Zanzibar’s southeast coast, between Paje and Makunduchi
- A fishing and farming community of roughly 7,000 residents
- Shallow, reef-sheltered waters suited to swimming and water sports
- Home to the Kuza Swimming Cave, a natural cavern pool near the village
Seaweed farming
Jambiani has long been known for seaweed farming, once a major local employer supporting several hundred workers, predominantly women. The industry has contracted significantly in recent years, though it remains part of the village’s identity and can still be seen along the shallows at low tide, where farmed seaweed grows on lines staked into the sand.
A quieter alternative
Compared with the busier resorts of Nungwi and the kitesurfing crowds of neighbouring Paje, Jambiani has kept much of its traditional fishing village character, with local life still visibly centred on the sea. Its shallow, calm lagoon, sheltered by an offshore reef, makes it a comfortable base for relaxed swimming and simple beach time.
Things to do
- Swimming in Jambiani’s calm, reef-protected lagoon
- Visiting the Kuza Swimming Cave
- Watching or learning about local seaweed farming practices
- Kitesurfing, offered by a smaller number of operators than in nearby Paje
Practical information
- Reached by road from Stone Town, about an hour
- Year-round warm coastal climate, with the wettest months typically March to May
- A smaller, quieter selection of hotels and guesthouses than Nungwi or Paje
