Kendwa Beach sits on the northwestern tip of Zanzibar’s main island, Unguja, about 56 km from Stone Town and roughly 3 km south of Nungwi. Unlike much of Zanzibar’s east coast, where the tide recedes for kilometres and leaves the shallows exposed, Kendwa has no significant offshore reef barrier, so its water stays deep and swimmable through the full tidal cycle.
The beach at a glance
- Located on Unguja’s northwestern tip, about 56 km from Stone Town
- Swimmable at both high and low tide, unlike most other Zanzibar beaches
- Powdery white sand and clear Indian Ocean water, with coral rock formations along the shore
- West-facing, making it one of Zanzibar’s best spots for sunset views
A beach built for swimming and sunsets
Because Kendwa keeps its water level through the tides, it has become one of Zanzibar’s most reliable beaches for swimming at any time of day, a contrast to the east coast where visitors must time a swim around the tide. Its west-facing orientation also gives it a reputation for some of the island’s most dramatic sunsets, watched nightly from beachfront bars and restaurants along the shore.
The Full Moon Party
Kendwa is home to the well-known Kendwa Rocks Full Moon Party, a festival-style beach event held once a month that draws visitors from across the island for music, fire dancers and acrobatics on the sand. Outside of the party dates, the beach retains a relaxed, low-key character suited to a quieter coastal stay.
Things to do
