Kapchorwa sits high on the northern flank of Mount Elgon, in cool air at around 1,900 metres, with forest above it, farmland spilling down the slopes and Sipi Falls just down the road. It is the base for the Elgon country of eastern Uganda: a place of hiking, mountain biking, running and coffee, and the home of the Sebei people. Runners come to train here, hikers come for the mountain, and everyone finds the pace pleasantly slow.
The town at a glance
- Location: Kapchorwa District in eastern Uganda, about 65 kilometres from Mbale and a short drive from Sipi Falls.
- Altitude: around 1,900 metres, which gives a mild climate and fine mountain views.
- The Sebei: Kapchorwa is the main town of the Sebei, or Sabiny, people. See our page on Sebei Culture.
- Land of Champions: the altitude has made Kapchorwa famous for distance running. Olympic marathon champion Stephen Kiprotich and world 10,000-metre champion Joshua Cheptegei both come from this part of Uganda. Visitors can run or walk the same roads and meet training groups.

Practical information
- Getting there: Kapchorwa is roughly five to six hours from Kampala via Jinja and Mbale, about 280 kilometres. The road climbs from Mbale.
- Best time: December to March is the driest. The rains make trails muddy but the mountain green.
- Accommodation: guesthouses in town and lodges and campsites around Sipi, many with views of the falls.
- Health: it is cooler at altitude, so bring a warm layer. See our Health & Safety page.
