Mabira Forest

Central Uganda · Year-round; timing depends on destination, activity and weather.

Mabira Forest, covering 300 sq km between Kampala and Jinja in Buikwe District, is the largest remaining block of semi-evergreen rainforest in the Lake Victoria basin and one of the most accessible forest experiences in Uganda. Protected as a forest reserve since 1932, Mabira sits directly beside the main highway linking the capital to Jinja, making it an easy stop for nature walks, birding and one of the country’s best zipline courses.

The forest at a glance

  • 300 sq km in Buikwe District, between Lugazi and Jinja, protected as a forest reserve since 1932
  • The largest remaining block of semi-evergreen rainforest in the Victoria Basin forest-savanna mosaic
  • Home to 315 recorded bird species, 312 tree species, 218 butterfly species and 23 small mammal species
  • Shelters the endangered Ugandan mangabey, a primate species found nowhere else

An easy forest escape between Kampala and Jinja

Mabira’s location directly on the Kampala-Jinja highway makes it one of the easiest forest experiences to add to a Uganda itinerary, whether as a half-day stop or an overnight stay at one of the lodges within or beside the reserve. Guided nature walks lead visitors beneath a rich canopy in search of primates, birds and butterflies, while the forest’s history of protection since the colonial era has helped it survive as the last substantial forest block in this part of the Lake Victoria basin, despite ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion nearby.

Ziplining and adventure activities

Mabira is also one of Uganda’s most established ziplining destinations, with a canopy course running high above the forest floor giving a different perspective on the reserve’s scale and biodiversity, alongside monkey tracking, camping and cultural visits to communities living around the forest’s edge.

Things to do

  • Ziplining through the forest canopy
  • Guided nature walks and birdwatching among 315 recorded species
  • Monkey tracking, including the endangered Ugandan mangabey
  • Camping or an overnight stay at a lodge within the reserve

Practical information

  • Located directly on the Kampala-Jinja highway, about an hour and a half from Kampala
  • Easily combined with a Jinja stay or visited as a standalone half-day or overnight stop
  • Ziplining and guided walks are best booked in advance through the reserve’s operators
