Mount Meru Trek

Tanzania · June to October and January to February

Mount Meru rises to 4,562 metres within Arusha National Park, Tanzania’s eighth-highest mountain and a popular acclimatisation climb for travelers preparing to attempt Kilimanjaro. Though overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, Meru offers dramatic scenery, genuine wildlife encounters on its lower slopes, and a summit experience that rivals Kilimanjaro for those with the time.

The mountain at a glance

  • 4,562 metres, Africa’s eighth-highest peak
  • A dormant stratovolcano, with its most recent activity recorded in 1910
  • A summit collapse roughly 7,800 years ago left the mountain’s distinctive horseshoe-shaped crater
  • Visible from Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day, and offering reciprocal views of Kilimanjaro from its own summit

The Momella Route

The Momella Route, approaching from the mountain’s eastern side, is the standard path to the summit, nicknamed “Socialist Peak.” The climb typically takes three to four days, passing through montane forest before reaching more open moorland and the final rocky ridge to the top, a climb often used as acclimatisation practice ahead of a Kilimanjaro attempt.

Wildlife on the lower slopes

Because the route begins within Arusha National Park, trekkers often encounter wildlife not found on Kilimanjaro’s trails, including giraffe, buffalo and colobus monkey on the lower forested sections, along with nearly 400 recorded bird species across the park. An armed ranger typically accompanies climbers through the wildlife zone as a standard safety precaution.

Things to do

  • Multi-day trekking to Mount Meru’s summit via the Momella Route
  • Wildlife viewing on the lower forested slopes within Arusha National Park
  • Using the climb as high-altitude acclimatisation before attempting Kilimanjaro
  • Day walks and shorter hikes within Arusha National Park for those not attempting the full summit

Practical information

  • Reached via Arusha National Park’s gates, a short drive from Arusha town
  • Best climbed in the dry seasons from June to October and January to February
  • An armed ranger and park permits are required, arranged through a licensed operator

Mount Meru offers a rewarding climb in its own right, and pairs naturally with a Kilimanjaro attempt for acclimatisation.
