The King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza, southern Rwanda, preserves the former seat of the Rwandan kings, combining a reconstructed traditional royal residence with a modern palace built between 1930 and 1933 for King Mutara III Rudahigwa. Inaugurated as a museum in May 2008, the site offers one of Rwanda’s clearest windows into its pre-colonial and early-20th-century royal history.

A reconstructed royal residence
The traditional section recreates three beehive-shaped thatched huts in the style of King Mutara III Rudahigwa’s 19th-century royal residence, giving visitors a sense of how Rwanda’s monarchy lived before European contact. Guides walk visitors through the layout and customs of royal life, from the huts’ construction to their role in court ceremony.
The Inyambo royal cattle
A living herd of Inyambo cattle, a long-horned breed that once served as a symbol of the king’s prestige, is kept at the site, with caretakers continuing the traditional practice of singing to the animals during ceremonies honouring the monarchy. A mausoleum on nearby Mwima hill holds the remains of King Mutara III Rudahigwa, Queen Rosalie Gicanda and King Kigeli V Ndahindurwa, adding a further layer to the site’s royal history.
