Bisesero Memorial

Rwanda · Year-round. Around 7 April, the national commemoration, access and atmosphere change; tell us early if your dates fall then.

Bisesero Genocide Memorial, on Muyira Hill about 60 km from Karongi in western Rwanda, remembers a community that, unlike almost anywhere else during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, mounted a sustained, organised resistance against those attacking them. Over weeks of fighting with whatever they could find, thousands of Tutsi in the Bisesero hills held out longer than almost any other besieged community in the country, at enormous cost.

We include this page, as we do for Rwanda’s other memorial sites, because a visit here shapes how many travellers come to understand the country. It is not an attraction in the usual sense; it is a place of burial and mourning, and it asks visitors to come with care, quiet and respect.

What the memorial is

From April 1994, Tutsi from across the Bisesero hills gathered on Muyira Hill and organised themselves to resist attacks, holding out for weeks using sticks, stones and whatever else they could find against attackers who returned again and again. An estimated 40,000 people from the area are believed to have died over the course of the genocide, despite the resistance mounted there. French peacekeeping troops present in the region at the time lacked a mandate to intervene directly and withdrew. The memorial was established in 1994 and marked more formally in 1998, and in 2023 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List alongside the memorial sites at Kigali, Nyamata and Murambi.

Understanding the history

Between April and July 1994, in about one hundred days, Tutsi men, women and children were murdered across Rwanda, together with Hutu people who opposed the killings. The number of victims across the country will never be known exactly, with estimates ranging from around half a million to over a million. Bisesero is remembered in particular for the resilience and organised resistance of the community there, even as the toll of the genocide reached them as it did elsewhere. In Rwanda, the term used is the Genocide against the Tutsi.

What you will find at the memorial

  • Muyira Hill: the site of the community’s sustained resistance, marked today by the memorial.
  • Memorial structures: monuments and burial sites commemorating those who died in the area.
  • Exhibition space: background on the events at Bisesero and the wider genocide.
  • Panoramic hillside views: a quiet, remote setting reflecting the memorial’s rural location.

How to visit with respect

  • Give yourself time, and plan a quiet remainder of the day afterward.
  • Dress modestly and calmly, with shoulders and knees covered.
  • Keep your voice low throughout the visit; this is a place of mourning for many Rwandans.
  • Follow the photography rules set by site staff, and never photograph memorial structures or mourners for entertainment.
  • Children: the content here is difficult, and the site is not recommended for young children.
  • Consider a donation to support the memorial’s preservation and educational work.

Practical information

  • Location: Muyira Hill, Bisesero, about 60 km from Karongi in Rwanda’s Western Province.
  • Time needed: about an hour.
  • Entry: arrangements and any fees are confirmed by us before your visit; donations are welcome.
  • Access: the memorial is remote, so we recommend arranging transport and a guide in advance.
