Airstrips in Rwanda: Fly-In Safari Guide

Rwanda’s compact size means most visitors travel entirely by road, with Kigali International Airport as the single arrival and departure point for nearly every itinerary. Domestic flying is limited, but a small number of airstrips support charter connections for time-pressed travellers or specific park access.

Main airstrips

  • Kigali International Airport: Rwanda’s main international gateway, a road transfer whose duration varies with traffic, weather and route, the gorilla trekking park headquarters.
  • Kamembe Airport: serves Rwanda’s southwest, near Nyungwe National Park and the shores of Lake Kivu.
  • Akagera airstrips: small charter airstrips serve Akagera National Park for operators offering fly-in game viewing in the park’s savannah landscape.

Planning a route

Given Rwanda’s small size, most itineraries combine Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe, and Akagera entirely by road without needing a domestic flight. Charter flights are mainly used by travellers on very tight schedules connecting Rwanda to a wider regional fly-in circuit, for example onward to the Serengeti or Maasai Mara.

Flying into Rwanda

Fly-in safaris cut hours of driving into a short scheduled or chartered flight between parks. Talk to us about adding fly-in connections to your route, or browse our safari packages for itineraries built around them.

Why Rwanda rarely needs a domestic flight

Rwanda is small, the roads are paved and the main parks are close to Kigali. The drive to Volcanoes takes about two hours, to Akagera about two and a half, and to Nyungwe most of a day. As a result, most visitors never take a domestic flight. A flight makes sense only for a very tight schedule, a luxury route, or a link to the Serengeti or the Mara. See our Rwanda safaris page.

Kigali International and the regional links

Kigali International Airport is the main gateway and the base for charter flights. Kamembe Airport near Rusizi serves the south west, close to Nyungwe and Lake Kivu, and scheduled flights have operated there from time to time. Rubavu on Lake Kivu has a small airfield. Airstrips at Akagera are used for private charters by lodges. Check current schedules with the operator, because they change.

Sample routes with a flight

A short luxury route flies from Kigali to a lodge airstrip, then trekks gorillas in one morning. A combined route flies from Kigali to Kamembe, tracks chimpanzees in Nyungwe and drives back through Lake Kivu. A regional route flies from Kigali to the Mara or the Serengeti, because there are direct flights through Nairobi and onward charters. Read our Rwanda gorilla tours and Kenya and Rwanda safaris pages.

Baggage, weather and safety

Charter aircraft use soft bags with a weight limit, usually about 15 kg. Morning mist over the volcanoes and Lake Kivu can delay flights, so we avoid tight connections. Operators follow national aviation rules. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is worth having. Read our health and safety page and visa and entry guide.

When road is better than air in Rwanda

The road from Kigali to Musanze is smooth and scenic, with terraced hills, and arriving by road lets you see the countryside. The road to Nyungwe crosses forest and tea plantations. For travellers who dislike small aircraft, Rwanda is the easiest country in the region to cover by car. Read our airports guide and Kigali International Airport pages.

Planning around Kigali's airport

Most visitors arrive late evening or early morning, so we place the first night in Kigali and drive to the volcanoes the next day. This avoids rushing and gives time to see the capital. If you arrive at midday and want to trek the next morning, the drive to Musanze is easy to fit in. Read our Kigali International Airport guide.

Regional flights from Rwanda

RwandAir and other carriers link Kigali with Nairobi, Entebbe, Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar, and flights change often. This makes Rwanda a natural hub for gorilla and plains combinations. Read our combined safaris page and multi-country safaris page for routes, then check the current schedule with us.

Packing for small aircraft

If you take a charter, bring a soft duffel and keep the weight near the operator's limit, usually about 15 kg. Leave spare bags at your Kigali hotel. Gorilla trekking needs waterproof boots and layers, which weigh a lot, so wear the boots on the plane and pack the jacket in your hand luggage. Photographers should carry lenses in a day bag.

Scheduled flights and charters compared

Scheduled flights, where they run, are cheaper per seat, but days and times are fixed. Charters leave when you want and can reach Akagera or a lodge strip directly, but the whole aircraft is paid for. For a couple, the road is usually the best value in Rwanda, because the drive is short and scenic. We price any flight alongside the road option.

Questions to ask about any flight

Ask which airstrip, how much luggage is allowed, what happens in bad weather and whether the return flight is protected if the outbound is delayed. We ask these on your behalf and put the answers in writing. Read our Rwanda gorilla tours page for trips built around short transfers.

Accessibility and special needs

Charter aircraft are small, with steps and narrow doors, so guests with limited mobility should tell us early. Road travel in Rwanda is easy to adapt, with comfortable vehicles, paved roads and short distances. For gorilla trekking, porters and an easier family can be requested. We plan transfers around the needs of the least mobile member of the party, and we pass them to every operator in writing.

Flying out of Kigali

The departure flights from Kigali leave at all hours, and many are overnight. Plan your last morning after a gorilla trek with care: allow three hours for the drive back, more for traffic, and leave a spare night if your international flight is the same day. Read our safari duration guide.

Booking flights and permits together

Gorilla permits fix the date, so book any internal flight after the permit is confirmed. If a flight is delayed, the permit is lost, so arrive a day early. Because most Rwanda travel is by road, the main risk is a late international arrival. We build in a night at Kigali before a trek and tell you the risks in writing.
