Rwenzori Trekking Routes

Uganda · Drier months, mid-December to mid-February and June to August.

The Rwenzori Mountains, straddling Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, offer some of Africa’s most demanding and rewarding high-altitude trekking, climbing through five distinct vegetation zones toward permanently snow-capped peaks. A UNESCO World Heritage Site covering about 1,000 sq km, the range is approached mainly via two established routes, the Central Circuit and the Kilembe Trail, both leading toward Margherita Peak, Africa’s third-highest summit.

The routes at a glance

  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site covering about 1,000 sq km in southwestern Uganda
  • Two main established routes: the Central Circuit and the Kilembe Trail
  • Margherita Peak, on Mount Stanley, reaches 5,109 metres, Africa’s third-highest point
  • Treks range from 3-day nature loops to full 7-to-10-day circuits reaching the summit

The Central Circuit

The Central Circuit forms an anti-clockwise loop through a series of mountain huts, including Nyabitaba, John Matte, Bujuku, Elena, Kitandara and Guy Yeoman, climbing from the foothills toward Margherita Peak. Depending on the itinerary chosen, this route can be walked in anywhere from three days for a shorter loop to ten days or more for a full summit attempt, passing through montane forest, bamboo zones, moorland and, near the top, permanent glaciers and snow that are increasingly rare on the African continent.

The Kilembe Trail

The Kilembe Trail offers an alternative approach, typically covered in seven to eight days, and is notable for passing through all five of the Rwenzori’s distinct vegetation zones on a single route, from tropical forest at the base to alpine conditions near the summit. Many trekkers choose Kilembe for its varied scenery and slightly different pacing compared to the Central Circuit.

Things to do

  • Multi-day trekking along the Central Circuit or Kilembe Trail
  • Summit attempts on Margherita Peak for experienced, well-prepared climbers
  • Shorter three-day nature loops for trekkers not attempting the summit
  • Observing the range’s distinct vegetation zones, from forest to glacier

Practical information

  • Reached via Kasese or Kilembe town in western Uganda, both accessible by road from Kampala or Fort Portal
  • Best attempted in the drier months, mid-December to mid-February and June to August
  • A high level of fitness, proper gear and an experienced guide team are essential, especially for a Margherita Peak attempt

The Rwenzori Mountains offer serious trekkers one of the most rewarding and least-crowded high-altitude challenges in Africa.
