Musanze Caves stretch for around 2 km beneath Musanze District in northwestern Rwanda, close to Volcanoes National Park and roughly two to three hours by road from Kigali. Formed by ancient lava flows from Mount Bisoke and Mount Sabyinyo, the tunnels offer a striking underground counterpart to Rwanda’s mountain gorilla safaris in the same region.
The caves at a glance
- About 2 km of lava-tube tunnels beneath Musanze District, northwestern Rwanda
- Formed by ancient basaltic lava flows from Mount Bisoke and Mount Sabyinyo
- Located close to Volcanoes National Park, roughly two to three hours from Kigali
- Opened to the public as a tourist site in 2014
A layered history
Local tradition holds that the caves once served as a coronation site for Rwandan kings, and in more recent history they offered shelter to thousands of people seeking refuge during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, a period the caves are remembered for alongside their volcanic origins. Today the tunnels are also home to large colonies of bats, visible clinging to the cave walls throughout a walk-through visit.
Exploring the tunnels
Guided walks through Musanze Caves typically take up to two hours, following the lava tubes past chambers shaped by the volcanic activity that formed them roughly 65 million years ago. The route is a comfortable, mostly flat walk suited to visitors of most fitness levels, making it an easy addition to a wider northern Rwanda itinerary built around gorilla or golden monkey trekking.
