Kilifi is a coastal town in Kilifi County, about 56 km northeast of Mombasa, built around the wide estuary of Kilifi Creek at the mouth of the Goshi River. It has grown from a fishing settlement into one of Kenya’s most cosmopolitan coastal towns, home to a genuine mix of Mijikenda, Swahili-Arab, Somali and long-settled European communities.
The town at a glance
- About 56 km northeast of Mombasa on Kenya’s central coast
- Built around Kilifi Creek, spanned by the Kilifi Bridge linking the town’s north and south sides
- Around 80 percent of residents are from Mijikenda communities, alongside Swahili-Arab, Somali and European populations
- Home to the Mnarani ruins, dating from the 14th to 17th centuries
History and heritage
On the south side of the creek stand the Mnarani ruins, the remains of mosques and tombs from a Swahili settlement dating back several centuries, a reminder that Kilifi’s history as a trading town predates its modern role as a coastal getaway. The creek itself has long served as both a natural harbour and a boundary shaping how the town developed on either side.
Modern Kilifi
Kilifi has shifted from fishing toward tourism, hospitality and services in recent decades, and its deep, sheltered creek has made it a popular base for sailing and water sports. A growing number of long-term foreign residents live alongside the town’s original Mijikenda and Swahili-Arab communities, giving it a distinctly mixed, easy-going character compared with busier coastal towns further south.

Practical information
