Congo Nile Trail

Rwanda · Year-round; confirm destination-specific seasonal conditions.

The Congo Nile Trail is a roughly 227 km route tracing Lake Kivu’s Rwandan shoreline from Rubavu (Gisenyi) in the north to Rusizi (Cyangugu) in the south, taking its name from the watershed ridge it follows between the Congo and Nile river basins. Pieced together from existing local roads and paths by the Rwanda Tourism Board rather than purpose-built as a single trail, it has become one of the country’s most rewarding multi-day hiking and cycling routes.

The trail at a glance

  • About 227 km long, running the length of Lake Kivu’s Rwandan shoreline
  • Runs from Rubavu (Gisenyi) in the north to Rusizi (Cyangugu) in the south
  • Mostly single-lane dirt road, with the southern half now largely paved
  • A full traverse takes roughly 10 days on foot or about 5 days by bike

A route through lakeside life

The trail winds along Lake Kivu’s shore through fishing villages, tea plantations and farmland, offering close contact with rural Rwandan life away from the country’s more heavily visited parks. Steep hills present a real physical challenge for cyclists in particular, but reward the effort with sweeping lake views at nearly every turn.

Choosing a section

Because the full traverse is a significant undertaking, many visitors now walk or ride only the northern half of the route, between Rubavu and Karongi, completing it in about four to five days on foot or two to three days by bike, since the paved southern section offers a different, faster-riding experience with less of the trail’s original rural character.

Things to do

  • Hiking or cycling multi-day sections of the trail along Lake Kivu
  • Overnighting in lakeside villages and guesthouses along the route
  • Visiting tea plantations and fishing communities passed along the way
  • Combining a shorter northern-half route with time in Rubavu or Karongi

Practical information

  • Best attempted in the dry seasons, June to September or December to February, when the dirt sections are easier going
  • Bikes and support vehicles can be arranged through operators based in Rubavu or Karongi
  • A support vehicle or guide is strongly recommended for the full traverse, given its length and remoteness
