Wellness Safari Uganda: Lake Bunyonyi, Forest and Gorillas

Lake canoes, forest walks and one gorilla trek at a slow pace.

A wellness safari Uganda itinerary trades the long drives and early starts of a standard itinerary for lake, forest and hill country at a slower pace. The classic route gives three unhurried nights at Lake Bunyonyi in the southwest, a short stay at the edge of Bwindi for one gorilla trek and open days around both. This guide explains the route, what you do each day, where to stay, and how to fit the trip around your dates.

Why Uganda suits a slower safari

Uganda is green, cool in the highlands and varied within manageable distances. In one week you can sit beside a calm lake, walk in ancient forest and track mountain gorillas with no flights if you choose. The country is small enough that the main transfers take half a day and many lodges sit on hillsides with long views and very little noise.

The southwest is the heart of a quiet trip. Lake Bunyonyi lies at altitude near Kabale which is ringed by terraced hills and the water is calm enough that a dugout canoe is the usual way to get around. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, an hour or two further on, holds about half of the world’s mountain gorillas. Put together, they make a week with one demanding day and many easy ones.

Our wellness safari planning guide explains the general approach. This page shows how it works in Uganda.

A seven day route

Our set route, the 7-Day Uganda Lake and Forest Wellness Safari starts and ends in Entebbe. On day one you arrive, transfer to a lodge near the airport and do nothing more, so the flight does not eat into the trip. On day two, you drive southwest, break the journey at the equator and reach your lakeside lodge in the late afternoon with the evening free.

Days three and four are the heart of the stay. Mornings are open. In the afternoon of the first full day, there is a dugout canoe outing and on the next, a slow guided nature walk through the terraced hillsides. Nothing is fixed before midday and you can skip any outing without a charge or an awkward conversation.

On day five you move on to the edge of Bwindi, arriving with time to settle in before the trek. Day six is the gorilla trek. Day seven is the drive back to Entebbe for your flight, with time to rest on the way. We can lengthen the lake stay, add a night at the end or build the whole route around a different start and end point.

Lake Bunyonyi: canoes, hills and quiet

Bunyonyi means place of many little birds and it is a good lake for slow watching. Kingfishers, herons and cormorants work the edges and papyrus and eucalyptus line the shore. The hills are terraced for farming and in the early morning smoke rises from the houses on the slopes.

The main activity is a dugout canoe, paddled by a local guide which glides across the water without engine noise. Ask your lodge about swimming conditions and safety before you enter the lake and follow local advice. Short walks climb the hill paths to views over the islands and a guide can take you to a village to meet farmers, with the community benefiting directly from your visit.

Phone signal at the lake can be weak and some lodges rely on solar power. We tell you what to expect before you go, so being offline is something you choose. If you need to stay connected, we can place a day at the start of the safari near Entebbe, where signal is strong.

Forest time near Bwindi

Bwindi is one of the oldest forests in Africa, dense, steep and full of birds, butterflies and primates. Even if you do not trek, the forest edge is worth time and a day of walking there is a quieter alternative to a full trek. Guided walks follow trails along streams and ridges and some include a visit with the Batwa community, the original forest people who share their knowledge of plants and the forest. Visits should be small, respectful and paid fairly and photography is by permission.

The gorilla trek is the most active day of the week. You start from a briefing, walk for anywhere from one hour to several depending on where the family slept and spend one hour with the gorillas once you find them. The minimum age is 15. The terrain is steep and can be wet so it suits those who can walk a few hours on uneven ground, and porters can be hired to help. Our guide to where to stay in Bwindi explains the lodge areas.

Gorilla permits are non-refundable and if you postpone a trek, you must buy new permits, so we confirm dates before permits are bought. Check current rates in your quote.

Adding chimpanzees, tea country or the coast of the lake

If you want a second quiet day with primates, Kibale Forest near Fort Portal offers chimpanzee tracking and a wetland walk and the crater lakes nearby are gentle places for a walk or a swim at the lodge. The road between the southwest and the west passes through tea country with rolling green estates that make a good stop for a picnic and a photograph.

For a longer trip, you can add a savannah park such as Queen Elizabeth National Park for a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel and a game drive, then return to the lake. If you want a beach at the end, you can fly from Entebbe to the coast of Kenya or Tanzania and finish on the sea. We shape it around the days you have not around a list of places.

Spa, yoga and food

Lodges around Bunyonyi and Bwindi vary. Some have a spa room with massage and others can arrange a therapist on request. Yoga is not offered everywhere so we ask in advance and confirm it for your dates. Treatments are usually paid for on site. If a spa matters to you, tell us early and we will choose lodges to match.

Food is simple and fresh. Expect vegetables from nearby gardens, fresh fish where the lake allows, local coffee and tea from the hills and fruit at every breakfast. Dietary needs are met with notice. Remote lodges are used to vegetarian and vegan guests but they need to know before you arrive.

Best time and practical tips

Uganda has two drier seasons: December to February and June to September, and these are the easiest times for roads, walking and forest trails. The wetter months: March to May and October to November bring green hills and fewer visitors with more mud on trails. Gorilla trekking runs all year. Our guide to the best time to visit Uganda covers the months in detail.

Practical tips: the highlands are cool, so pack a fleece, a rain jacket, long trousers and sturdy walking shoes. Bring a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a swimsuit and a book. Carry any medication in your hand luggage with a doctor’s note. Malaria is present at lower altitudes in Uganda, so speak to a doctor or travel health clinic six to eight weeks before you travel about protection and check official advice. Offmap Safaris is not a medical provider. Ask us about spa options, phone signal and diet when you plan.

We start with your dates and the pace you want, then choose lodges, guides and transport to suit you. We explain what is fixed and what can change, and our team monitors and looks after the trip from the first message to the last transfer. Frequently asked questions

What is a wellness safari in Uganda?

It is a slower Uganda safari built around a quiet lake, a forest stay and open days. A typical week gives three nights at Lake Bunyonyi, then Bwindi for one gorilla trek. Mornings are free, outings are optional, and the pace is chosen for rest rather than sightings.

How many days do I need for a wellness safari in Uganda?

Seven days is a good minimum for the lake and forest route, including arrival and departure. Nine or ten days give you an extra lake night, chimpanzee tracking or a savannah park. Shorter trips can work if you stay in one place and skip the drive to Bwindi.

Is gorilla trekking part of a wellness safari?

It can be, and most travellers include one trek. It is the most active day of the trip, so we place it after the slower lake stay. The minimum age is 15. Permits are non-refundable and new ones must be bought if you postpone.

Is there phone signal at Lake Bunyonyi?

Signal can be weak, and some lodges have limited power or wifi. We tell you what to expect before you book, so going offline is a choice. If you need to stay in touch, we can place a connected night near Entebbe at the start or end.

When is the best time for a wellness safari in Uganda?

December to February and June to September are the driest months and the easiest for roads and walks. The wetter months are greener and quieter, with more mud on trails. A slow trip works all year, so choose by what matters most to you.
