Lake Naivasha

Kenya · Year-round; confirm destination-specific seasonal conditions.

Lake Naivasha sits at roughly 1,884 metres above sea level in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, about 90 km northwest of Nairobi, making it one of the most accessible freshwater lakes in East Africa. Covering around 139 sq km, Naivasha is unusual among the Rift Valley’s chain of lakes for being freshwater rather than soda, a quality that supports a rich population of hippos, fish and waterbirds year-round.

The lake at a glance

  • Roughly 139 sq km, at about 1,884 m elevation in Kenya’s Rift Valley
  • About 90 km northwest of Nairobi, near Naivasha town
  • One of the few freshwater lakes in the Rift Valley chain
  • Fed mainly by the Malewa and Gilgil rivers, with no obvious surface outlet

Crescent Island and the lakeshore

Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, a partly submerged volcanic crater rim on the lake, allows walking safaris among giraffes, zebras, waterbucks, elands and wildebeest without the presence of large predators, a rare setup in East Africa. Boat rides across the lake bring visitors close to pods of hippos and past fish eagles, while Crescent Island alone hosts more than 200 recorded bird species, part of a wider lake checklist that runs into the hundreds, especially during the October-to-March migratory season.

Elsamere and the lake’s conservation history

Elsamere, the former lakeside home of naturalist Joy Adamson, author of Born Free, sits on Naivasha’s southern shore and now operates as a conservation centre open to visitors. The surrounding area also supports Kenya’s flower-growing industry, with large horticultural farms along the lakeshore supplying cut flowers for export, a detail that shapes the local economy alongside tourism.
