Fort Portal, about 300 km west of Kampala along the western Rift Valley escarpment, is widely regarded as the tourism and adventure capital of western Uganda. Named for Sir Gerald Portal, a British Consul General of Zanzibar, and originally built as a fort to protect the Kingdom of Toro, the town today serves as the natural base for exploring some of Uganda’s most varied scenery, from crater lakes to chimpanzee forest to snow-capped mountains.
The town at a glance
- About 300 km west of Kampala, overlooking the Rwenzori Mountains from the western Rift Valley escarpment
- Originally built as a fort to protect the Kingdom of Toro, named for Sir Gerald Portal
- Surrounded by dozens of volcanic crater lakes, tea estates and banana plantations
- The traditional capital of the Toro Kingdom, one of Uganda’s constitutional kingdoms
A base for western Uganda
Fort Portal’s location puts it within easy reach of a remarkable concentration of attractions: Kibale National Park, about 35 km south, for some of Africa’s best chimpanzee trekking; the Rwenzori Mountains for high-altitude hiking; a scattering of volcanic crater lakes for walking and cycling right around town; Semuliki National Park for birding and hot springs; and Queen Elizabeth National Park a little further south for classic savannah wildlife. Few towns in East Africa offer such a range of experiences within a single day’s drive.
Tea, hills and volcanic scenery
The countryside around Fort Portal is defined by rolling tea estates and lush, volcanic terrain dotted with crater lakes, many ringed by forest and farmland. The landscape’s fertility and scenery make the drive into and around town as memorable as many of the individual attractions it leads to.
