Volcanoes National Park sits along a chain of five extinct and dormant volcanoes on Rwanda’s northern border, and is best known as the setting for Dian Fossey’s decades of gorilla research — her research centre and grave are still within the park.
Beyond gorilla trekking
The park also offers golden monkey tracking, a more playful, less physically demanding experience than gorilla trekking, and several volcano hikes for travellers who want a summit day, including the option to climb Bisoke to its crater lake.

Nearby, the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo offer a relaxed contrast to trekking days, and community-run cultural experiences such as Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village give a window into life around the park.
