Usambara Mountains

Tanga Region, Tanzania · Year-round

The Usambara Mountains, part of Tanzania’s Eastern Arc chain, formed at least 100 million years ago, making them far older than the far younger volcanic peak of Kilimanjaro nearby. This great age has allowed an extraordinary diversity of plants and animals to evolve in isolation on the range’s forested slopes, placing the Usambaras among the world’s top-20 recognised biodiversity hotspots.

The mountains at a glance

  • Part of Tanzania’s Eastern Arc Mountains, formed at least 100 million years ago
  • Considerably older than Kilimanjaro’s relatively recent volcanic peak
  • Recognised as part of one of the world’s top-20 biodiversity hotspots
  • The Eastern Usambaras hold the greatest concentration of biodiversity within the range

An ancient evolutionary laboratory

The Eastern Arc Mountains as a whole are home to 75 endemic vertebrate species, thousands of endemic invertebrates and around 15 plant genera found nowhere else on Earth, a level of isolation-driven evolution that has earned the range comparisons to other globally significant biodiversity hotspots. Millions of years of separation from surrounding lowland habitats allowed species here to evolve along their own distinct paths.

A cooler, greener escape

The Usambaras’ higher elevations bring a noticeably cooler, mistier climate than the surrounding lowlands, supporting dense montane forest interspersed with tea and other agricultural terraces on the range’s lower slopes. This combination of unique wildlife, forest scenery and cultivated hillsides gives the Usambaras a character distinct from Tanzania’s better-known savannah parks.

Things to do

  • Guided forest walks in search of endemic plants and wildlife
  • Village stays and cultural visits in the surrounding hill communities
  • Birdwatching for the range’s specialist montane species

Practical information

  • Reached via Lushoto, the main base town in the Usambara Mountains
  • Cooler mountain temperatures call for warmer layers than on the lowland safari circuit
  • Best combined with a wider northeastern Tanzania coastal or Kilimanjaro itinerary

The Usambara Mountains offer one of Africa’s richest and least-visited biodiversity destinations. Offmap Safaris can build a visit into a northeastern Tanzania itinerary.
