Katonga Wildlife Reserve

Western Uganda · Year-round; timing depends on destination, activity and weather.

Katonga Wildlife Reserve, covering 211 sq km in Ibanda and Kamwenge Districts about 200 km west of Kampala, protects a mix of savannah, wetland and riverine forest along the Katonga River. Established in 1998, the reserve offers one of Uganda’s few opportunities to explore a protected area partly by canoe, following the Katonga’s slow, swamp-fed waters between Lake Wamala and Lake George.

The reserve at a glance

  • 211 sq km in Ibanda and Kamwenge Districts, western Uganda, about 200 km west of Kampala
  • Established in 1998, protecting the Katonga River and its surrounding habitat
  • Home to more than 40 mammal species and over 150 recorded bird species
  • A mix of acacia woodland and scrubland, permanent and seasonal wetlands, and pockets of riverine forest

A river reserve, explored by canoe

The Katonga River, fed by swamps southwest of Lake Wamala, flows slowly east toward Lake Victoria with periodic flows also reaching Lake George to the west, and its wetland margins support a distinct set of wildlife adapted to swamp and riverine habitat. Unlike most Ugandan reserves explored purely by vehicle, Katonga can be visited both on foot and by river canoe, giving visitors a quieter, water-level view of the reserve’s wildlife and birdlife.

A quieter, community-scale reserve

Katonga’s modest size and canoe-based access make it a relaxed, low-key alternative to Uganda’s larger parks, with guided walks and canoe outings available through the reserve’s camping facility. It suits travelers looking for an easygoing nature stop rather than an intensive game-viewing safari.
