Murchison Falls National Park takes its name from the point where the Nile is squeezed through a gorge barely seven metres wide before dropping into the pool below — one of the most dramatic river scenes in East Africa, and the centrepiece of Uganda’s largest national park.
What there is to do
A boat cruise along the Nile toward the base of the falls is the classic Murchison experience, bringing you close to hippos, crocodiles and elephants at the water’s edge. Game drives across the park’s savannah cover the northern bank, with reliable sightings of giraffe, buffalo, lion and a wide range of birdlife.
Getting there
Murchison Falls is reachable by road or by a short scheduled flight from Entebbe, and works well as either a standalone few days or combined with a chimpanzee tracking stop en route.
Best time to visit
The park can be visited year-round; drier months make game drive roads easier going, while the boat cruise is a strong experience regardless of season.
